I grew up in California where See’s Candy is made. The box comes wrapped in white paper with a gold sticker on each end to hold down the flaps. At holiday times they wrap in seasonal paper if you want. When I was young it was $1.75 a pound (the 60’s or so.) At Christmas we three kids would scramble to see who could get to See’s first - inexpensive presents, already wrapped! You couldn’t lose.
See’s didn’t ship candy outside the state in those days because it melted too easily (no additives, just butter, sugar, chocolate, nuts, etc.) When we drove to WV for the summer we would always bring several boxes for the relatives, and every time my grandmother flew to WV part of her suitcase was reserved for See’s candy. Several years ago a cousin visited us in Calif and when she was leaving for home I asked if she wanted to get some See’s candy. She didn’t seem interested - they have candy in WV. Until she saw the box, and realized that See’s was the wonderful candy she got as a kid when we came to visit. She bought pounds of it to take home to WV.

That’s the website for See’s. It’s a little more than $1.75 per pound, but it is SO worth whatever they charge!

I know I’m rambling, but two stories about See’s and my family. I like the “Nuts & Chews” assortment. My son was 25 before he realized that See’s makes cream centers, too. They also make Marzipan (almond paste wrapped in chocolate) and it’s one of the only places I’ve seen it sold. My sister gets her very own pound box as a gift each Christmas she likes it so much.
When you shop at See’s the first thing they do is give you a sample piece (and sometimes even a second piece if you shop long enough.) I was 16 and a new driver when my mom asked me to go to the shop and pick up some See’s candy. I bought the candy (with her money) and boy did I enjoy that sample piece of candy. When I got home she took the box of candy, and began looking for the sample (which I already ate.) She was MAD - she paid for the candy and I took the sample. I pointed out it was my reward for going to pick it up from the store. She was not amused.

I didn't have Sees until I married. I heard my friend talk about it and when I married, my sister in law sent me some from Los Angeles.
I read later, that the late Bing Crosby's wife and daughter would get a pound box and sit and eat the whole thing, with milk, at Christmas.
When my sister in law sends a box up to NY…we are all eating it. LOL Good stuff! I like the milk chocolate ones, hate marzipan of any type…and I had thier Toffee too - that's good. I need to eat less candy…my dentist told me keeping that candy off my teeth is alot cheaper than dental work. LOL I should know that, being a prior dental assistant..but it's soooo good.
