As much as we love to cook and be in our kitchens, sometimes we just don't have much time. My Crock Pot has been wonderful for these times. I love making all sorts of things in it from roast with potatoes and onions to pulled pork bbq to chicken and dumplings that taste like Mom's (even though she spent all day cooking hers from scratch!)

For dinner tomorrow night I'm just filling it as high as I can with a bunch of chicken legs we got on sale in a big bag. salt and pepper and home made BBQ sauce and that's it. Then make mashed potatoes later to pour the extra sauce over MMMmmmm. And a fresh salad on the side. Heavenly, and it doesn't heat up the kitchen!

So what is your favorite meal to cook in a slow cooker?

Crazy as it may seem, my family's favorite crock pot meal is Sauerkraut and Pork Ribs.  I love it because it is so simple to make.  I knew when I met my DH and he said he loved this meal, (his mother had made it for him, as mine had for me)  that we were destined to be together.

I just brown a package of country style ribs and layer them in the crockpot with sauerkraut.  A few ribs, a can of kraut, a few ribs, a can of kraut, a few ribs, a can of kraut.  Cook it all day and then make a big pot of mashed taters to go with it.  Heaven on a plate!

It's a great meal on a cold day!

I'm not sure what it's called, but I take chicken (any cut up chicken or even boneless, skinless breast), a can of whole cranberry cranberry sauce (or homemade), and 1 cup of catalina dressing (french and russian work too).  I cook it until the chicken falls apart.  If I'm using chicken with skin and bones, I pick the skin and bones out when the chicken is falling off the bone.  Then I serve it over pasta or rice.

Ooooh, I love this topic!  I do more crockpot cooking in the fall than any other time because I'm often away from home in the evenings.  I'm running around for football and volleyball (and later, by winter, basketball).  It's great to come home to a meal that's READY.  I do a lot of chicken in the crockpot, with vegetables and noodles or rice, and also I do a lot of chili.  I need some new crockpot ideas!!

Thanks for adding this to the forum.  I love using my crockpot but am very uncreative when it comes to coking.  Now with the help of all of you I will get some good recipes! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I like to make pasta sauce in mine, because the slow-cooking seems to perfectly bring all the flavors together. I will do that one day, then the next, I use the crock-pot to cook homemade meatballs that I have made the night before, with the sauce.

Love making cabbage rolls in the crock-pot, too. So very good!

I love to make soups in my crock pot.  Here is a recipe for a healthy Brunswick Stew.

Brunswick Stew

(Makes 8 servings)

1 lb. skinless, boneless chicken breasts (raw), cut into bite-sized pieces

2 potatoes, thinly sliced

10 3/4-oz. can tomato soup

16-oz. can stewed tomatoes (I've also used petite diced tomatoes and liked it better)

10-oz. package frozen corn

10-oz. package frozen lima beans

3/4 cup chopped onion

*Cabbage (optional)

1 or 2 bay leaves add more flavor

1/4 teaspoon salt (Watch this measurement - you can always add it later, but can't take it out!)

1/8 teaspoon pepper

1.  Combine all ingredients in large bowl and place in cooker.  *I put cut up cabbage on the top — because we love cooked cabbage in our stew.

2.  Cover.  Cook on High 3 hours.  Reduce to Low and cook 2 hours.  (Depending on how your crock pot cooks, adjust cooking time.  You just want to make sure those potatoes are done!)

I serve this with corn muffins.

I do BBQ. Place pork butt in crock-pot with chopped onions and some garlic you can add green/red pepper if you like, also some chopped jalapenos if you want a little heat, and about 1/2 - 3/4 cup water or broth. Before serving shred the pork and add your favorite BBQ Sauce, we like “Sweet Baby Ray's”.  Serve on bread or buns or as your meat dish along with salad and vegetables.

Kensjewl, I like to do pork BBQ in the crock pot also.  I take a frozen pork butt, pour about 2 cups of apple cider vinegar over it, a tsp of liquid smoke, and a tsp of red pepper flakes.  I start it in the morning, and by the evening, it's ready.  You drain off the liquid, shred the pork with forks (it's usually falling off the bones) and then serve on buns with the sauce of your choice.  This is more of a Carolina style pork, and I like the tangy taste of the vinegar.  :)

Chuck roast

Lipton Onion soup

Can of Cream of Mushroom soup.

All into crock pot turn on and turn off when done.  Should be fork tender.   At some point you should

make some rice or mashed potatos, probably towards the end. This is a great winter meal.

I love my crock pots. I just lost one and am looking for a new one. We used it at our Kiwanis booth at the Appalachian Fair last week and it was broken.

This week I put together a beef soup from some minute steaks and vegetables. I added about a cup of spagetti sauce and cut it with water and the liquid from the vegetables. It was very good.

I use a lot of recipes from the Fix It and Forget It cookbooks. I have about four of them and everything I have made has been a winner.

I pulled this recipe off a quilter's forum years ago…  It looks icky, but it's really good.  Everyone that has tried it has been surprised.  I got my mom making it — now she sends it (in her crock pot) on occasions when people need a meal — and they love it too!

Turkey Breast in Crock Pot

This isn't a recipe, just a wonderful way to cook boneless turkey breasts.  (I make sure they are all white meat as that is what my family prefers.)

Remove the turkey from the plastic bag.  (If you didn't know to do this, maybe you should continue no further!)    There will probably be a plastic bag of gravy mix included — do what you want with it, but don't leave it in the turkey breast!

There is usually an elastic web around the turkey to hold its shape.  Leave that on, but pull it out all the way around to loosen it from the turkey.

Put the turkey in the crock pot with a can of cream of chicken soup.  Don't add water, just the concentrated soup, dumped on the turkey breast.

Cook on high for 5 hours.  It's really good.

Serve with your favorite sides.

***You can cook two at once — just extend your cooking time and add another can of soup.

This is the recipe for Chicken and Dumplings I found online somewhere.  My Mom would spend all day stewing a chicken, pulling the meat off the bones, mixing the flour, milk and stock til it was just right etc… *I* can NOT make it like Mom. It's something I came to terms with years ago lol. So when I saw a review of this recipe that said it tasted like their Mom's, I had to try it, and WOW, I was pleasantly surprised. It is a lot closer to home made taste than I figured you could get in a Crock pot. IMO (In My Opinion)

  • 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cans condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1 onion, finely diced (optional, I don't use them cause Mom didn't)
  • 2 cans biscuit dough, torn into pieces

Put the chicken in the crock pot and dump the soups on top with the butter and onions (if using). Add enough water (or chicken stock) to cover and cook on HIGH for 5-6 hours. But 30 minutes before ready to serve, add the torn up biscuit dough pieces. Just check a dumpling before serving to make sure they cooked all the way through.

This can be modified as you like. You could do a can of cream of celery or broccoli  instead of two chicken, add peas and carrots, etc. Have fun with it.

Another great crockpot h'ors douevre that you can make for parties is meatballs.  Just buy the frozen pre-cooked meatballs and dump them in the crockpot with a small jar of grape jelly and one regular-sized bottle of barbecue sauce.  The jelly melts into the sauce.  You just stir it and serve hot with toothpicks.  So incredibly easy, and it's delicious!  It takes maybe two hours on high to get it ready.

Try it, you’ll like it! It doesn’t taste like you would think it would. I think even non -horseradish lovers would probably love it.
