Stuck in Suburbia

As soon as we can sell our house in suburbia, we'll be moving back to the country.  Not lots of acreage, against my wishes but back to a small town and into the country.  We'll be building our home, and planning on being there for quite a while.  With all this, I have been giving serious thought to the styles I want to have in our home, and along with that all the little details - from stationery to my recipe cards to a guest book in entry…  So, I know that Suzanne named her farm (you can read about it here) but have any of you?  What if you don't have a true farm, but just a home you love?  Do you have a common theme?  Did you just use your initials?  Did you use an icon?  I’m torn. I want it to be clever. I want it to be timeless. I want it to represent the best of who we are.  But I don't know WHAT I want it to be.

We named our simply  Four Acre Farm.  We are diversified and nothing jumped out and got us.  We created a logo and business cards even.  I do the craft fair circuit and hubby is a custom sawyer and logger…. so it all kind of fits. I don't think you have to actually have to have a farm to name it.  Anything that is a part of you should have a name, don't you think?  We almost named this Muddy Acres because we have so much mud for so many months of the year.

Our farm is called Asgaard Farm and Kennels.  My husband is Norwegian, and Asgaard is the mythical home of the Norse gods.  We added the “and kennels” for me.  When we named our farm, I knew I would be breeding my mountain dogs - someday - and wanted it to be separate from the farm/livestock.  We also developed our logo, business cards, websites, etc.

Don't sweat the details yet.  Find something that is unique to you as a couple, your family heritage or even your region.  Everything beyond that will fall into place.

Once the house is built, and you're “home” — the name will just come to you.

Thanks!  I know I'm probably trying to put the cart before the horse, but there's so muh to think about and do that if I don't think aloud and make lots of list, something will get let of in the shuffle.  I really like both of your “names”… I'll probably continue to bounce things off you all, it's going to be a long process.

I agree that the name will just come to you.  You will figure out all of the things that it means,or you want it to represent, or what you are doing, and it will just come to you.  Any help I can be, I'm here.

I loved naming our farm!  It was fun, but it was hard to decide, too, and we thought about it for a long time.  I was actually leaning for a long time toward the Poky Little Farm, because it's beside the Pocatalico River-which goes by the nickname the Poky River.  I thought that was so cute, but eventually I realized that name was Too cute and wouldn't really wear well over time so we went with something historically related but future-oriented at the same time.  It's not as cute, but I think it will wear better over the longrun.  Good luck figuring it out!  The first thing we did when we decided was order a sign.  That was exciting!

We're starting out slow, but I hope to build into at least enough of a business to at least pay for feed someday.  So I have been thinking about a name for our farm too, or at least what will be a farm one day.

So far nothing's jumped out at me.

GIZMO !!!  you have mountain dogs!!! I want one!  I have an Australian Shepherd that is a frisbee king and I love him to death…but when we went to Nappa and Sonoma I picked up a book about Whinery dogs and there were all these pictures of Mountain Dogs…..I had never heard of one or seen one but oh, they are soooo cute and adorable!!!  what are they like?  for example, my aussi needs to be ran everyday….lots of play time and he is so smart i swear he speaks English, my lab …well you know…she just wants to please you and swim and just hang out….are their coats thicker than a lab??

oh I want one!!!!!!!!!!

we built a huge back porch….and we wanted to name it because we now eat outside a lot or sit outside in the evening….and we couldnt think of a name at all….(cuz remember…we are in a neighborhood) and the designer died shortly after it was finished and his middle name was Caston…when we both saw that name we looked at each other and said THAT'S IT!!! so it is now The Caston.  the name will come to you when you least expect it and you will KNOW its perfect!
