This recipe is almost evil because it’s so tempting, so easy, and I have the ingredients on hand all the time. I have to make it! You?
How to make Chocolate Pudding Cake:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
Combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Add milk, oil, and vanilla; stir well. Spoon batter into an 8-inch square greased pan.
Mix an additional 1/3 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons cocoa. Sprinkle over batter in pan. Pour one cup boiling water over the contents of the pan. Don’t stir it!
Bake at 350-degrees for 25-30 minutes. As the cake bakes, it forms two layers, one layer of sweet, moist cake and another layer of rich pudding. As if that’s not awesome enough, stick a dollop of whipped cream on top. Or, you know, two.

I feel led to inform you that it is in poor “taste” (all puns intended) to post a recipe like this during week two of January when the entire world is on a stupid diet.
The time for something like this is week FOUR of January when everyone has given up and are looking for ways to regain that .07 lbs. they lost during weeks 1-3.
Now hand me the cocoa and shut up…

This is the most frequently requested dessert at my house and has been for the 40 years of marriage and about the 10 years before that. My mother said the recipe came from WWII rationing. Don’t know for sure, but I just love this recipe. My friend substitutes boiling coffee for the water in the last step. Can also add chopped nuts - they stay in the cake part.

If I hadn’t already made fried bread and corn bread today, I might just bake this decadent cake. Oh my goodness, it looks so good. My daughter loves to bake. I think I’ll send her this link and let he drool over it until she can’t stand it any longer! Thanks, S!

If I had read your blog just five minutes earlier, I’d be in the kitchen whipping that evil baby up right now! I’m having the worst chocolate/sweet attack I’ve had in months, I kid you not! I’ve been going through every cupboard, both freezers, both fridges, looking for ANYthing that’s sweet and chocolate. Candy wouldn’t do. It needed substance. I finally just settled for a bowl of cheerios, and sat down to read your blog as I ate them. Woudn’t you know it? Delectable chocolate was staring me in the face.

That’s a beautiful photo!
Here we’d call that a ‘Chocolate Self-saucing Pudding’. It’s the sort of thing my mother learnt to cook from her mother, like scones and sponge cake. She would have eaten at boarding school too, on a special occasion.
I keep meaning to post my recipe…

Seeing this inspired me to make a Texas chocolate sheet cake today. LOL I have a HORRID sweet tooth. My dentist said “Donna, keeping candy off your teeth is alot cheaper than dentistry” >LOL. I should know better, being a dental assistant at one time. But, I just LOVE sweets.

Hi,
I just made the chocolate pudding cake, it is so yummy! Thanks for sharing the recipe with us. I wonder what could happen if instead of boiling water, I would try boiling milk? What do you think? Thanks again for a winner cake! Oh, I forgot to mention that my son and I are frequently making the grandmother bread together, it really is awesome!
Love your blog,
Mirela
