I'm Mariah, I'm 45 and I think I'm an odd one out here because I don't live in WV and I'm not a farm girl! I grew up in Arizona and now live in northern CA. My husband is a pastor of a church and we were missionaries in Europe for 15 years. We pretty much raised our kids overseas, though they were all born in Arizona. We are currently pastoring a church here in the Bay Area. We've been married for 26 years and have three kids…two grown daughters, a son who is 17 and a cat who thinks the world revolves around her. It actually does, mostly! haha! I've always dreamed of having a farm, but my life isn't moving in that direction so I live my farm life vicariously through other people! :p

Hi there! I'm new to the forums here but I have been following this website for almost a year now. Hubby and I live in So. Cal. but one day we are going to head east to Colorado where life is better and I can have my small farm. I'm an avid canner / baker, knitter, crocheter and lots of other "ers" that I can't think of right now. I love to enter my things into fairs and have even won a ribbon or two! We have no children but we do have three pooches that are absolutely spoiled rotten. Gotta love them pooches!!
Nice to meet you all!

Hi, my name is Kathryn. I'm 24 and currently live in Janesville, WI. Still live in a city, but I hope to one day live in the middle of nowhere. (Cow poo smells so clean.) Nothing special about me. I love to read, but as I am still working toward my bachelor's degree, I don't get to read as much as I like.
I have to confess. I love romance novels. All kinds. But I hadn't heard of Suzanne McMinn until I ran across this blog. I think I'm going to have to rectify this obvious lack in my education.
My life is still unformed. I hope it leads me somewhere nice.

“Chickens in the Road” is the first stop I make every morning once I arrive at work. I inherited too many of my mom's farmer's-daughter genes to really enjoy the corporate world I live in. Seeing what's going on “down the farm” sort of helps me get through my day.
I live in the SF Bay area. I compete in obedience with one of my Cardigan Welsh Corgis, but both of my boys help me play at sheep herding on the occasional weekend. In addition to the two dogs, our menagerie includes two cats and an assortment of fish. I also live with my 18-year-old daughter and my husband, who both think anything less than 5-star is roughing it.
Husband and I have bought our first home with an official, real-life backyard, so this summer witnessed my first vegetable gardening attempts. I must say I was successful enough to be encouraged, but not successful enough to, well, be successful. The caterpillars and aphids enjoyed more cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli than I did. I have about a million green tomatoes, but have only had maybe a dozen red ones. My squashes all have mildew, and I didn't know enough to know what to do about this.
Still, every year's a new year, and in this area I get to play at year-round gardening, so while I am waiting for the corn and beans to finish becoming corn and beans (if it's not already too late for that), I planted some lettuces, garlic, leeks, and more cauliflower and broccoli to see how we do during our “winter”, which generally consists of a lot of rain and hopefully no caterpillars.
I have a lot to learn about this farming gig, even if my farm consists of a tiny patch of ground between my house and the neighbor's.
I'm also really intrigued with going back to the home style of cooking … everything from scratch. My bread has a way to go, but I've finally got the roasts figured out. Actually, I'm really intrigued with going back to the homestyle way of living. I've always done needlework, but have taught myself to knit (much to my family's chagrin), and, well, I just really wish I could spend my days canning, cooking and clearing out the coop. And, yes, I know none of those things is really considered much “fun”, unless you're weird. And I'm weird enough to know it's funner to spend your days living than it is to spend them pretending to be an executive.

Hello, my name is Aimee (ahmay) I am 19 engaged with a one year old son. I am pursuing two degrees, one in secondary education biology and one in secondary education dance. Where I live we are under a lead advisory, so I am looking to put in CHEAP planter boxes with tons of sun flowers and daisies, if I can get them to grow here! i used to live in Georgia on a nice three acre plot, but that did not work out for my family at the time. Our dream is to get our own farm some day. A nice thing is that there are so many farms in both sides of our families we are guaranteed to inherit one some day, a sad day that will be though. The first farm animal I will own is a pig and then a goat, because I want to make cheese with farm fresh goats milk! Most of the cooking stuff I know I came up with by myself, Came off this website, or I learned from my Nana (she will always be the best cooker in my eyes). Anything else? lol

Hello everyone! My name is Denise and I live in the city of Knoxville, TN with my dearest husband and our three children. My oldest lives in Va with her grandparents . I homeschool our three youngest. My hobbies include reading, collecting pre 1920 books, antique shopping, bird watching, travel and just relaxing. Currently, I am not doing too much since I am off my feet for the next few days for a knee sprain that refuses to heal properly. I am trying to avoid surgery if at possible. I can't wait to meet everyone here.

Ladies,
Since I found CITR I have been rather apprehensive about outing myself as a mere male.We seem to be in rather short supply apart from 52 is, or are there others?
Anyway here goes.I am retired. eighty year old widower, with a farm, albeit,I administer rather than actively run it.I was blessed with a wonderful wife who was a superb cook.Which totally spoilt me for the mundane rubbish they call Haute Cusine. I was attracted by the wonderful country recipies on Suzannes blog…real food. I like cooking and having tried some, have become hooked.
I have enjoyed reading the articles about life on the farm.nostalgia really, but I am full of admiration for the gutsy way Suzanne is enjoying her life and bringing up her children. If possible would like to be a participant.

Hi, i'm Louise and i live in the UK with a husband, assorted dogs, sheep, bantams, ponies and over grown sons still at home!
In a previous life i was a farmer – we had 250 acres, sheep, both for meat and milk, calves, geese and a lovely flock of Marrans chickens.
However now i am lucky enough to just play at it on 3 acres in the south of England, and enjoy growing as much food as i can.
I love Suzanne's blog, it makes me laugh, and i am soooo impressed with the amount of food you guys in the US preserve each year. fantastic!( My friends over here are wowed by a batch of 10 little jars of jam.)

Good morning, everyone. My name is Maud, I'm 53 years old, and I live in central Virginia in a semi-rural area. I'm a home health nurse which means I'm on the road most of the time. I live with my mother who is French and my daughter who is hard headed, an elderly whitish mutt named Jillie, and a bad tempered kitty named Filou.
I stumbled across Chickens in the Road when googling 'corn husk dolls' (you can see how successful I was on the Primitive Crafts forum).
Anyway, you all seem like friendly genuine people with a zest for life and a love of the old-fashioned and homey arts that seem to be fading away. If I could, I'd love to homestead but I think my daughter's hair would stand erect with horror if we did. She likes the modern life. Oh, well, I can dream about it.

HI!
I'm Deb, born and bred in Panama City Florida. I was raised in the country with chickens, ducks, quail, turkeys, pheasants, pigs, dogs, cats and a big fishing pond. But, I never did have what I wanted the most….a horse! But, I loved growing up in the country with my very loving family. Daddy is gone now and I lost Mama just 6 months ago. I have wallowed in self pity ever since. Mama left me 45 quilts, 35 unfinished quilts and 40 quilt tops! Yep, Mama taught me to quilt too so I forsee a lot of quilting in my future. My husband David built me a 3 pole floor quilt frame and I have been happily quilting for 3 months. I put Mama's Boston Commons quilt in and I am almost finished with it. I have one surviving sister that also got 45 finished quilts Mama made. I hope to become a master quilter like Mama was. I was the sole caregiver for Mama who had COPD/emphysema and CHF. I took care of her every single day since Daddy died and Mama stayed in her own home! She was a fiesty little thing. That is why her death has just knocked me down, we spent every day together. I am slowly coming out of that pity hole…
David and I have 3 acres and just had our dream home built. But, our daughter lives in Arizona, so far away. Now we are trying to decide if we should move closer to Jessica but it is hard to leave my new house and our land. I am very attached to this place. It is so nice and quite.
I also love to crochet. Mama taught me to crochet 46 years ago when was 5 years old. I remember reading directions before I could read a book! I love making doilies, tablecloths and bedspreads. Jessica has a chest full of crochets things for when she has her own home. Right now she lives in an apartment because she is getting ready to go into grad school for her Ph.d in Bio-chemistry. I'm very proud of my baby girl.
It is a thrill to find this forum. I love reading it everyday and can really relate to most of the things Suzanne writes about. I look forward to getting to know everyone here.
Oh!!! I didn't say how old I am! I am 51 years old, just had a birthday 10/27/1958! I'm short….4'10 inches and to be honest….round! hahahaha I am native american, Mama was cherokee indian and Daddy was Black Foot.
I almost forgot to tell ya'll about another hobby I love. I grow roses. Antique roses, the kind your Granny might have grown. Big, gorgous, petal packed goodness with a strong scent that you smell across the yard. Roses are soul soothing to me, I love to sit on the porch and watch the blooms dance on the wind. I started growing them 11 years ago when I quit smoking. Working with roses kept my mind off of the nasty cigs and so, roses actually saved my soul I think. Right now I have around 100 roses, I used to have 200. But hurricanes took out many and drought took out a couple more. I have 30 in pots waiting for their forever home…LOL

I'd like to introduce myself this fine November 1st morning! My name is Val, I'm almost 55yo, and live in a small town in east central Minnesota. My dh John and I live on a 40 acre hobby farm with 2 horses, 5 donkeys (1 is a baby) and a few barn kitties who actually live under the deck. This life is a huge change for me, as I grew up and lived in central NJ until 2001 when I moved here. No horses or donkeys where I lived back then! We actually use about 5 of the acres, rent out about 20 to a friend for crops, and the "pasture ornaments" have the rest, where they clump, not dot. Just like Suzanne's sheep! Anyway, now that I have the space, we planted quite a few flower beds. We live in a zone 3, so our growing season is short, but there are still many plants that are hardy enough for our -40 winters. Hostas are my favs, probably have 200 different hostas. Lots of daylilys, sedums, coral bells, clematis, peonies, and believe it or not, roses. Hardy shrub roses that are on their own root and most are rebloomers. We also have some grapes, and for the first time, inspired by Suzanne, I made my own jelly, 24 half pints. Yesterday my stepson brought over a bag of apples from his tree, and I made 5 pints of applesauce. My other passion is stained glass. Last year I bought a kiln to fuse glass, and am having fun with that. Next I'd like to get into making beads, maybe next year. Right now we're installing an outside wood boiler and cutting wood for that, and this winter are working on remodeling our kitchen. Whew, that's alot to write for now. My website desperately needs updating, some links are broken, but you can see a bit of my life at http://www.meadowmuffinfarms.com I don't blog there, or anywhere for that matter; I think I spend too much time reading others! Thanks for reading, and if you do go to the website, you'll see how I met John and came to move out here.

Hi, I'm Gena. I'm 43 and the mother of three. My daughter is 25 and my sons are 21 and soon to be 20. I also have a wonderful, incredible granddaughter who's 5. I started college at the ripe old age of 38 with the intention of earning my nursing degree, but I continued with my education after that. I'm currently in CRNA school and, the Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I'll graduate in 2 years. I'm a born and bred Southerner with Scarlett O'Hara running through my veins (the tenacious, never-give-up part of Scarlett that is!). My husband of 3 years is from WV and is fully convinced that he's going to move me up to the frozen North once I finish school. While I think WV is the most beautiful place I've ever seen, I'm not sure my thin Southern blood could take the cold!
