Hello everyone!!  I'm originally from NE Ohio, but the last 4 years have been living in a small community in NE Tennessee.  From city to country thanks to my hubby.  This is where he grew up…. and I love it.  It was a dream of mine to live  the rural life…. and now I do.  We don't have a lot of flat land for planting ( we live in the mountains) but I do have a small garden.  Next year I hope to get into canning!! I can't wait!!

I work full time as a nurse but still have enough time to putter around the yard. I found this site a while back and have been hooked ever since.  This site is fantastic…. the only drawback is that I can spend the whole day here reading!!!!!!!!!

Suzanne….keep up the good work…….and I hope you win!!

Julieanna

ps……To Pete…..I googled your quote…..I have mine on now……and ANOTHER site I can spend all day on….http://www.alphaDictionary.com…thanks…Help

Hello All!

I'm Scarlett, living in sunny Sarasota Florida. I was born and raised in Tampa, FL… so I didn't go far! I've traveled a lot but have never lived anywhere else. I do love it, though I might be persuaded to move someday.

I am 24 (will be 25 in January) and don't yet have any human children. My boyfriend (soon to be fiance?) and I have 2 dogs, one large black cat,  a couple of fish and a snake. I have chickens but they are currently at my parents house since I don't think roosters would go over so well in my neighborhood. I do plan to get some hens at some point in the next year or so though.

I live in suburbia, but hold many of the country values we all love about Suzanne's blog. I am currently going back to school and working at a local Panera (bakery/cafe for those who don't have them). My degree is in Music Education, and my current pursuit is Early Childhood Education. I love gardening, frugality and protecting the environment. I get a lot of my country nature from my mother… and my very southern roots.

I'm looking forward to delving into more home cooking, preserving and gardening. I asked my dad (the greatest and most handy man alive) to help me build my dream square foot beds for my birthday in Jan. Just in time to start planting (we don't really get frost, and I'm designing it to protect from the light frosts we do occasionally have). I have a new blog but haven't written in it since I started reading Suzanne's! Should I blame Clover? I'll get back to it tonight, I hope… lol.

Anyway, its nice to meet you all and be here to learn form other fabluous people… I'm looking forward to it! Wave

Hi ,  I'm Mary , I live in Newton Falls, Ohio.  i've lived in Ohio since I was 5 years old.  I immigrated from Germany in 1952 with my parents.  I live on a 1 acre plot with my husband and 13 chickens and 1 cat.  I'm 62 although sometime I feel like I'm 82, but I love living the simple life.  We put in a small garden every summer, do some fishing and my honey goes deer hunting every year.  I enjoy canning and some crafting.  I love to cook,"and it shows", Hungry   collecting recipes, and just always learning something new.  I never thought I would learn a computer, yet here I am.  I'm not a fancy person and I love simple things and making the most with what I have.   I wish I could have more animals, like a couple of goats maybe, to make my own cheese, but I have to be satisfied with just my chickens for now.  Look forward to meeting new people on this forum, and learning a few things here

Hi!  My name is Christina, I am a recent transplant to Marion County, Ohio, which is a huge transition from my former life in the burbs of Columbus, Ohio!  I love living on our property of 4.5 acres, where I plan to have a garden so I can preserve veggies and fruits.  I found Chickens in the Road while I was searching online for a cushaw squash recipe, and was pleasantly surprised to find everything else I have been searching for too, mainly, a guide for simple living and self-sufficiency.  I am recently married (10/10/09) to a man who shares my loves of the country, space to breathe, and simpler living.  I have 3 sons, 21, 18, and 15, and 2 stepdaughters, 17 and 12.  We are a full house!

I am happy to be on this forum, and can't wait to read more of Suzanne's adventures… she is a great teller of tales!

I'm new and trying to feel my way around, as I am not too swift with the "umputer", as my grand daughter tagged this thing when she was too little to pronounce all her words correctly.  Glad to find your place.  Seems like home to me.  I am a retired nurse and live with my White German Shepherd in Arkansas.  Have a garden and some fruit trees, love the outdoors.  Have been inside pretty much all the time as of late, rain, rain, rain this entire year.  Glad to meet ya'll!

I am a 48 year old mother of six. Two of which have left the nest. My four daughters, husband, and I live in rural Wisconsin. I have homeschooled and continue to homeschool all my children.

We've lived in the same house for 23 years. It is a large farmhouse that was gutted and remodeled when we moved in and added on to about 6 years ago.

I've water bath canned for years and have done some pressure canning as well.

We live on my husband's paycheck, so I try and save money wherever I can. I buy things when they are on sale and use coupons combined with sales to get the best prices on things. I love clearance sales!

I've enjoyed reading the posts on here about canning and baking. Thank you for this site. I have it bookmarked now, and I've joined the facebook group too.

Hello.  My name is Christy and I'm 27 years old.  I live in northwestern Illinois with my husband Devan and my son Jeremiah.  I grew up on a farm in northern Michigan and have been crazy about the country life ever since.  I just came across this website yesterday and I'm so glad I did because it is exactly what I wanted!  I was up until midnight reading the posts.

We live with my mother and father in law right now.  We're in the process of looking for a country home to purchase.  Once there I can start finding the animals I want and growing the plants that I want!  I'm very excited about it.  I'm glad to be here.

I have a blog called Petals and Pine and the address is  http://www.chriskit81.blogspot.com if anyone would like to know more about me.

Hi all!  I thought I would introduce myself, since I've started posting to the forum as if I know what I'm talking about!!  My name is Shae and I am recently married and in my late 30's.  Both my husband and I spent some time on mini-farms when we were younger, and now that we have spent half our lives in the big city, we are ready to get OUT!

We are currently just outside of Portland, OR but our goal is to retire as soon as possible to our 80 acres in south central Washington.  We will be off grid and our goal is to be completely self-sustaining.  We will be pretty 'hard core' as my friends call it.  But for now we are in practice mode!

Here in Portland we are on 2 acres, have a mini-dachshund, 2 mutt cats, and a handful of chickens.  We had 2 guineas and were up to 23 chickens, but they free-ranged right onto a predator's dinnerplate.  For this winter we are holding steady at 10 chickens, but will be getting at least a dozen more soon.  We're going to hold off on more guineas until we are on a larger property – the neighbors never complained, but I could see a look of hesitation in their eyes when they said they didn't mind the "Buck-Wheat"ing.  We also raise 4 or 5 turkeys every year for the freezer.  Turkeys are great, too.  Wonderful personalities.  I can't wait to get goats and bunnies and piggies and barn cats and maybe a peafowl or two and and and…..

We have a good sized garden every year, and maybe one of these days we'll win the war of the weeds.  We've been putting up food for a couple years now, and try to make our own produce (and livestock) a larger part of our diet every year.

Hopefully I'll have some good insights to impart on my co-readers, but most of all I look forward to what you all can teach me!!

Hi!  My name is Rachel, and I'm 35 yrs old.  Married for 14 1/2 yrs (hit 15 April Fool's Day), with five children (9,7, and 5 yo girls, and twin 2 1/2 yr old boys).  We homeschool, and generally just try to keep the children as occupied in our daily lives as we can, on top of the regular "book work".   My husband retired from active duty service with the Army in the spring of 2008, and we moved from NC to OK…we now live on 10 acres, and have the chickens, duck, geese, dogs, and a couple of cows, that we always dreamed of having whilst we were confined within city limits.  Not to mention a lot more space to spread out!

We have had a big garden the last two years…they were, well, mildly successful (mostly due to soil, bugs, over-watering, and using freshly broken ground).  We had pigs last winter, and put them in the freezer this spring.  Delicious.  Same thing with some of the chickens (we specifically raised some meat birds, for canning/freezing).  I canned a bunch both last year and this one, with what we picked at the U-picks, as well as what we got from our own place.  We're hoping to put in some good trees and berry bushes soon…but it is a growing process, and we can't do it all at once (as much as we would like to).

I started reading Suzanne's blog after an online friend posted about the pepperoni rolls and how much she loved them.  I've since made several of the recipes, and figured I may as well as join up (hey, what's another forum when I'm already on four? ;-) ), and attempt to contribute here and there.
