I finally convinced my mother to get chickens. I convinced one of her friends that it would be in his best interest to put up the wood to build the chicken coop and put up some of the feed and we would let him keep some chickens with ours. I'll be getting the chickens I've wanted before I go to Iraq. Hints and tips on raising them in the most profitable way would be appreciated. Laters.

Congrats Jeremy. Your mom is in for some fun and some delicious eggs. My son did two tours in Iraq. I wish you a safe journey.

I sure do love my chickens! They are a hoot to watch and the price of eggs is outrageous these days. We also have 11 that are going into the freezer in a week or so.

We got a friend of ours in our church who we just bought a billy goat from today that has mix breeds. He likes having them because they can fly if a dog or something gets at them. On the goat… We got him because theres a big german shepard that keeps on buggin my puppy and our nanny goat… And we want some little goats. I'm workin as hard as I can to have my farm before iraq.

I’ve managed the chicken and the egg thing, but I’ve never put a home-grown chicken in the freezer. I’m not squimish, and I’m pretty good dealing with cutting up a store-bought chicken, and gutting fish. But I wish I could have someone lead me through the process the first time. I’m just sure I’ll cut where I shouldn’t and end up with a real mess. Suggestions?

check out this about her first processing. I havent done mine yet so cant really offer any advise. I have been reading BYC for about 6 months now and it is loaded with any kind of chicken or other bird info you could possible need. I'll be reporting on how mine turns out too, soon as the deed is done.

I'm getting chickens within the week! We are preparing a place to keep them and as soon as we are ready, we are getting them. We are getting 4 or 5 (I havn't decided yet) Rhode Island Red pullets and one Leghorn rooster. It's the only rooster available and I want the hens to have some protection. So, hopefully, within a couple of weeks, I will have my very own fresh eggs. I'm so excited!

Congrats on the chickens, Jeremy and Momanna98. RIR and Leghorns are excellent breeds for high production of eggs. And the RIR are so gentle and friendly. Good choices.

I am going to be replacing my layers soon too so they will be ready to lay by spring. I think I am going with RIR this year. The rest will go in the freezer, 9 last Sunday and the rest soon. RIR are really good layers adn then good meat birds too.
