Thanks everyone! Phoebe's a little sweetheart and she seems to be settling in nicely. I'm sure it will take her some time to get used to us all but so far she follows us around like a little puppy when she feels like it. Hey Pete….I'll pass your 'welcome' along to her in the morning! Thanks again WV_Hills…you were a great help. Fork

That is a beautiful little jenny, you're so lucky. We have 5 donkeys, all gray. Gray is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but I'd love a flashy little filly in the pasture. I love the cross on their backs, don't you? My donkeys just  adore having their cross scratched. And rub inside the ear. Try that, she'll fall asleep practically I guarantee. Happy Feet

Hi Valerie…thanks for your compliment for Phoebe. You have 5 donkeys!!!….lucky girl! Yes I love that marking too..it's definitely a cross. I haven't done enough of the ear scratching…she has one of those plastic number tags on one ear (done by previous owner) and she's been getting these darn needle like stickers from somewhere in her pasture. I usually end up spending my time with her brushing her and picking the darn things out of her ears and off her face! Guess we need to get out there and pull those weeds up. Anyway do you have a filly or are yours all males? They sure are cute animals. I promise…next time I go out to see her today…I'll give her ear a good scratching. WaveFork(pitchfork!)

We have a mare, one stud, the others are her boys.  I know what you mean about the tag in the ear. Apparently Hawthorne, the stud, had one in the ear before John purchased him, but it was torn out! So one can always tell Hawthorne from the others because of his lil ear flap.

Weed control is a problem for us, too. The cockleburr plant is a thorn in my side, as well as the animals. Lucky, it takes 2 years to grow into a stickerbush, the first year it's just big leaves, but it takes a LOT of weed killer to tame them. We usually set them on fire if and when it's safe to do so.

Ohhhh if you ever want to get rid of her?? pm me ;-)

I had 2 goats with tags in their ears..Jos removed them was real easy…now they both have a little hole in one ear, mom's bit bigger than the littlle kid..he only had the tag in for 3 weeks or so.

ok, I'm getting the itch to get a couple of bigger farm animals than chickens. I just saw that there were a couple of gelded male alpacas for sale nearby and I'm wondering if anyone here has them and what do you like/dislike about them.

Also considering goats or mini donkeys or maybe even a llama!

Any input is welcome… I don't need to hear from Clover though… we all know what she would suggest!

Any one of those animals would make a fabulous pet. I had a gelded llama, and they are so sweet. People are afraid they'll spit, but Scooter only spit if another animal tried to eat his feed. He was darling. Alpacas are similar, smaller in stature and their wool is valuable. A sweeter animal is hard to find.

Donkeys, well, I'm partial to. Our baby donkey, Keister, nuzzles and follows us wherever we go. Just a furry snugglebunny.

Goats are adorable too. I gave mine away because I had trouble keeping them fenced in. They'd escape, and ate a dozen crabapple and pine trees. Those naughty boys ate grape vines, hostas, sedum, you name it and it was nom-noms for them. But they were a 10 out of 10 for cuteness and personality. So any of your considerations would be great.

Thanks for narrowing it down for me Valerie! lol!

Since you've had them all… which would you suggest as best for a beginner? I know that goats are easy keepers but I do worry about that eating everything in sight thing. My boss just got goats and I do love them though.
