We just found out that we are being given a free Dinky Donkey this weekend!! This should be good news…and IS good news but we just moved to our little farm recently and have been busy renovating the farm house and have done nothing to the old fences …most of which were never meant for something so small. The pasture is all grown over like a jungle with lots of saplings and junk from the farm and we can't even get into the barn from tree's grown right up to the door. Looks like we've got our work cut out for us before he (uncut) arrives!!!! It'll be an adventure and lots of hard work but I'm so excited to start on our 'farm journey'! ( thats a pitchfork!)

If he's like ours, you'll love him !! They are not at all aggressive in the sense that they don't try to get out of a fenced pasture. No shoving, rubbing, etc.. We have woven field fence, though, while I'm guessing you have barbed wire ?

Lucky you …and you have time before winter kicks in, to put a few fence posts in the ground and some shelter.(got an old shed?)
We did a 2 hour fence job for the turkeys…so it can be done…good luck.

Oooo, how fun…a dinky donkey!! Wonder if I could pass it off as a large dog — like Monty?

Thanks for the info on your dinky donkey…I hope this little fellow is like yours. No it's not barbed wire that's around the property. It's a real mix….part is what my hubby calls 'hog panels'…that will work fine but most of it is just a medium thick large square wire fencing that has been squished down over the years. Other parts were just made of what looks like 3 strands of rubber or plastic covered heavy duty wire through wood fence posts. I think the little fellow would just step over and duck under what's there! This 'pasture' is more like a tree farm at the moment with lots of elm saplings and small evergreens on it….the poor little fellow will have to hunt for his supper but there is grass here and there. Will he clear off a lot of that? We plan on moving a lot of the elms and evergreens out of there but there's way too many to move them all. Thanks again for your comments and any advice you may want to give us!!! We appreciate it.

Thanks! We have a barn with a lean-to on the side for him…and it faces east so he should be nice and cozy in there. We haven't gotten into the barn yet as the trees have been allowed to grow right up to the barn door and we've just been too busy to take them out of there. I'm really looking forward to seeing what's inside…it's like an adventure! We hope to get a few turkeys eventually..never tried raising them before but we do have chickens so it can't be too much different I would think. Thanks for the comment!

You're right! We haven't seen this little fellow yet but the owner says his back is about a man's pocket height. I'll try and get a picture on here if I can figure out how to do it.

You could maybe do an electric fence if you're in a hurry ?? They seem to like leaves, so he might help clean up the pasture. We don't really do much for ours—-hoof trimming every other month or so, a mineral salt block, hay if they need it, sweet horse feed once a day, apples if you have them, wormer occassionally, brush if you like. They tend to roll on the ground and get dusty, so don't be surprised when you see that. Or when he starts braying !! Maybe fly spray if they get bad in hot weather. And, of course, you have to love them.

THANK YOU for all the information! The people were good enough to give us a bit of time to get the fences ready. We have an area where we can put him that has grass and won't need to do much fencing there to make it safe…while he's enjoying that we'll keep clearning and fencing the other pasture. Hope this little fellow is good natured…we know he's been with 3 other uncut males and they've been fighting. We doubt that he's been handled a lot and I just read that donkey's sometimes don't like dogs…did you find that with yours? We have 2 Shih Tzu's and an Akbash pup so hopefully we don't have any problems there….guess time will tell. Thank you again for your suggestions we appreciate it!

Neither of ours seem to pay much attention to the dogs—-big or little—-and vice versa. The only real aggression I've seen is with Jack, who's down with the sheep. He's real selfish about the sweet feed we give him in the evening, and circles and kicks at the sheep if they try to steal his. They, of course, have their own, but sometimes finish before Jack gets done with his—–donkeys are kinda slow :) He likes to just stand beside me and get his ears/face/neck scratched——-

Well that's good to hear…hope ours is like that with the dogs. Hey…he's smart..he's not going to bite the hand that fed him!

Well today is the day they are delivering our dinkey donkey. I'm excited but a bit nervous…never had a donkey before so I read up on them and geeeeeez sometimes it's better to just 'wing it' and learn on your own! One article said they don't like dogs…another said if alone then can get mean (it will be alone for a while). Hopefully it likes chickens because they've been banned from the rest of the property until we get dirtwork done and will be hunting and pecking alongside the little fellow. I don't care what the books say…I'm just going to continue to be excited and if I can…I'll post a picture on here if I can figure it out. Wish me luck! (pitchfork!)

Well heck….our little donkey never arrived. The people who own him weren't able to make it on Saturday but hope to be out with him next weekend. We were really looking forward to seeing him but that give us more time to work in the pasture and get a few more things done before he arrives. Should be a fun day!

Still haven't recieved the dinky donkey that was offered to us…..BUT….I found a little 5 month old spotted Jenny on Craigslist and we're going to see him this morning. If she works out we'll be bringing her home this morning! I'm so excited..will report back later.
