Morning all,

I am looking for a recipe for fried grits. My grandma would make the grits the day befor and set them in the fridge to set up..slice…then the  next morning fry them in bacon fat, as a girl I loved them. But not sure if any thing was added to them I have tried to make them but they always fail if anyone has  a recipe I would love to have it

thanks

Good morning, Sara!

I'm sorry I can't help you with fried grits, I've lived in the north my whole life, and I have never even eaten them, but I'm sure the people with the tried and true recipes will be here!!

Also, could you pop over to the "Introduce Yourself" topic in the Welcome forum?  Everyone can introduce you properly!!

Sara, we called that fried mush and I know exactly what you mean but I don't know exactly how it's made. I remember yellow cornmeal cooked in water, then poured into a greased pan. It was cooled and then refrigerated overnight and it was sliced and fried the next morning, served with syrup more often than not.

You can buy instant grits. Does that work?

We also called it fried mush…one cup water, one cup cornmeal.  Cook until thickens, stirring constantly.  Pour into loaf pan and refrigerate overnight.  Next morning, slice, fry and ENJOY!

I was raised eating grits every single morning and Mama fed grits to the biddies she hatched out in her incubator.  My northern Uncle would not eat grits because he said they were "chicken feed" because he would see grits in the card board box in the kitchen that Mama put the biddies in when they were dry from hatching.

But I have never ate fried grits!  My husband would eat cold grits with milk on them growing up.

Imagine that!  Eat grits like cold cereal!
