Hi all,
My Grandpa used to grow a wide green bean that he called "Lizzy beans". I'm pretty sure they were a bush bean and they were a heritage varity. I remember snapping and stringing them on the back porch with Grandma.
Now I am sure that was just a "nick name" that Grandpa gave them…but I'm wondering if anyone out there has heard of them? Knows what they are really called?
Of course even if I DO find them, I'll have to learn how to can and cook them like Grandma did!
Thanks!

Well, I googled lizzy bean………lizzy bean is an artist………not much help there!! To me, it sounds like the heirloom green bean, where there actually was a string………the ones I've grown do not have a string.

Was it wide enough to be an Italian type of green bean?

It would be funny if the "lizzy" bean turned out to be from seed passed down from someone named "Elizabeth" instead of the name of a variety of bean.

Never heard of Lizzy beans, but in the upstate of SC and in NC they have a green bean called 'greasy bean'. It looks just like a string bean, but have a larger seed and every one I talked with said they cook them just like string beans. Of course down south that means with a chunk of ham or fatback.

I'm clueless as to the different types of beans. It's not a skinny bean. (would those be French green beans?) It has a string and Grandma cooked them with bacon.
I know Grandpa would save the seeds each year. Gonna drive me batty till I figure it out OR find something close enough that'll pass my taste test. (of course it's been 20 years since I last had my Grandma's green beans so it might not be too hard!) ;)
Boy have I been missing her lately!!!
