Ok, I'm all set up and ready to go.. I want to start with simple - but here's a REALLY silly question - I'm looking at making these “pumpkins” - Does it only have one seam down the side or is it two seams and bottom? Is this too hard for a beginner? I'm confused, but they really do look like they would be easy.

And what about Rag Quilts- what can you tell me about them???
And my last crazy question: Should my bobbin thread and my upper thread always be the same color?

Hey Stephanie…This is your basic tote bag pattern. The fold of the material is at the bottom and you have a side seam up each side. Its best to sew from the bottom fold to the top just in case your material slips a little and is uneven. This leaves your top open. With the bag still inside out, open it up and put the two side seams together and lay it flat. See how the corners come to a point? Depending how round you want the bags, is how much you will sew across each corner. Sew about an inch and then you can see how it will be a rectangle, like a paper sack. You can sew as much off each corner as you want to make it rounder. When it is like you want, you can trim off the excess corner. Turn right side out and you have a bag. I hope that was a little clearer.

Thanks Georgia, I just finished one of them. I will take a photo tomorrow. After I got started it made sense. I even turned down my top so and made a nice finish without sewing the bag shut too… Lots of fun, I think I'm going to like sewing.

The thread only matters to you. Depending on what you are sewing, you will only see either the top thread or the bottom thread. Or incase of your bags, you wont see any thread so it doesnt matter at all. If you hem the top down you will see the bottom (bobbin) thread. In some of the newer machines, (expensive ones!) the machine may not even sew right if the bobbin does not come from the same spool of thread you are using. Thats a real headache!
Rag quilts are a really easy quilt to start with. There are lots of books and easy instructions to them. The main thing to remember is when it is finished all your seams will be on the outside of your quilt, not the inside. The “rag” part is the reaveling of the seam allowance. It will not rag until you wash it and sometimes it takes several washings for it to really fluff. And you should take it to a laundry mat to do it because it has clogged and burned up many a washing machines.

Just be careful…it can be awfully addicting! I just got back from a trip to a quilt shop, Hancocks, and Hobby lobby. A total of about 200.00! But I sure am happy!

Thanks for the tips on the threads…. I'm sure I'm going to have a million more questions.
And that's a shopping spree I would enjoy… I love HL - there is so much to look at and be inspired by in there.

Be Careful of the site for the rag quilt posted above. I have macafee virus scan and it told me the site has a trojan in it……….there are other sites about rag quilts. I have made them and they are adorable and look like they are old quilts. If I can find the sites, I'll post them. Thanks.

Thanks Dana, I didn't get the warning, but also just googled rag quilt and popped a link into my post. I've removed it so as to not have other folks click it… You may want to do the same. I'd hate to give somebody something.

I LOVE THESE PUMPKINS!!!! I am going to send the info to a church craft group. i use the same fabric box and do it for those kleenex boxes. I make the fabric box to be
I cut a 19 inch long piece of fabric that is about 18 inches wide. i sew it the same, but turn down about 5 inches and use that press on seam tape and iron it down. so there is a box like the pumpkins only longer and probably wider with 5 inches turned insde. then I measure 3 inches down and sew 2 pieces of ribbon where the side seam is. i insert the box of kleenex and tie the ribbon and fold down the top of the box. ribbon is 18 inches. i sold these at craft sales and made them out of fall, christmas, dog prints and more. i keep them around the house. they are great for a nursing home person or a person who lives in assisted living bec they have a small space for decorating.

Glad to see that rag quilt link down — thanks Stephanie! I, too, got a link that said my computer was attacked also — my virus scanning took care of it.

Rag quilts are the BEST!! I've made a TON of them, and still have stacks of flannel squares to make more. Here's a link to my daughter's in my flickr album. http://www.flickr.com/photos/gizmo0922/2139764884/ It is around ten years old now, queen sized and she LOVES it. It gets softer with each washing.
The ones I make for our vehicles and camping, have denim squares (old blue jeans) thrown into the design.
The heavier the fabric, the thinner - or no - batting.
Also, make sure you buy the “rag scissors” (they have a heavy spring in the handle) to do your snipping.

That's it, my completed pumpkin. Easy peasy, I don't know what I was worried about.

I love those pumpkins. Great idea Georgia to use that bed spread!!! I have seen pumpkins made of that kind of spread before. I hope to make those pumpkins next year, have too many irons in the fire this year. I like the small print brownish fabrics, greens, golds, oranges too. Great on the front porch in sizes too. EAsy to pack away too.
