Oh my, WV, they are both stunning! As a painter, I like structures, the one with the barn, I really like, but would crop the high wire off the top.
But the mountains and fence really grab your eye. I opened both pictures and put them side by side. I could not take my eyes off the mountains. Like I said stunning! A beautiful gift!

I agree with cropping out the power line. Every great vista from my hilltop seems to be bisected with either a power line, or a telephone line. If the picture isn't too complicated I've actually been able to blot it out with the Photoshop tools, but the wire has to be against sky, and not through a building! It's also pretty hard to take the wire out of the middle of the best view from the hilltop. I'm not good enough to clone the trees so they won't show I've played with the photo.

Until I looked through last year's winter pictures I didn't realize I hadn't taken one picture of the main house in the snow. I may have to use one of the pictures above, but I'm hoping for a big snow so I can take one of my white house with the bright red roof peaking through the snow. (My avatar is a tiny picture of the house and the hills.)

It looks like the picture is crooked. Actually the house is straight, the land is sloping. There isn't much land on the 7 acres that is actually flat. WV is HILLS! (Thus WV_Hills as a user name…)

WV:  My vote is for the 1st one!  I love both, but my fav is the 1st!

To get the line out, just crop…..you'll only lose about what 1/4″ off the top?  The tree will just go up off the picture as it does now……just a thought……

No matter which one you choose, either would be just a lovely card!  That is just the lovliest of ideas in my book — it's from the heart.  For my imediate family this is what they receive also.  I know what I do with cards from the store, that's what everyone else does too!  But the cards that are personalized I cherish and display every year with my Christmas decorations…….

all of the photos are wonderful.  I would love anyone of them.  Another idea - When my mother in law died, her dtr make us all family cookbooks.  she got recipes from all the family, grandmothers, great grandmothers etc. especially holiday favorites and typed them up, put in family photos and other pictures and had them bound at Kinkos I think.  we all cried.  especially with her recipes and our pictures with her etc.  this is a really cheap wonderful idea.  i got one for my son, when he grows up and will take care of it, he is 25. hmmm

I made a family recipe book for my brother when he got married. My sister and I both knew where to find the recipes for the food we grew up with, but my new sister-in-law didn't have a clue when my brother would tell her about a meal that he loved, but didn't know how to make. I think my sister-in-law appreciated the cookbook more than my brother did. Some of the family recipes were ones my grandmother cut out of the food section of the newspaper in the 50's, and some were from a cookbook she received when she got married in the 20's. Our traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas recipes include my mother's turkey stuffing, and my great-grandmother's Applesauce Cake made with raisins, black walnuts, and apple butter.  My sister has the recipes laminated so she can pull them out each holiday.  She even has the shopping list for the meal laminated so she can take it to the grocery store. She's not a great cook, but she sure is organized.

In ordering aprons from Georgia, I came up with a thought - a thought for me, but thought I'd share.

My kids want me to make them pillowcases.  I had ordered “kits” from a quilting site - really neat fabrics.  Ranch style '50's fabric with contrast on the end - and a pretty floral with coordinating fabric on the end.  End meaning the part that flaps after a pillow is inserted.  This probably has a technical term, but I'm a bit brain dead this evening.  (Try to use your imagination and follow me here…)

Anyway, my kids are in their mid 20's - and their friends are now asking for these pillowcases too.  They like them because they take their pillows everywhere they go - camping, hotels, friend's houses, car rides - and they can tell those are their pillows.

My point - and I do have one - is that these would make great Christmas gifts - and you could stuff them with goodies/gifts/pillows - or not…  Just another idea.

I come from a very large family, we tried every way possible, drawing names, bring a generic present, etc, finally we settled on not exchanging adult presents, and parents are responsible for bring a small present for their child.  Because we have so many little children in the family its always fun and there is a lot less stress on me as I host this event.  I am in the middle of a family of 11 children, but we have lost 3 sibs in the past 3 years.  The holidays have lost some of the fun I used to enjoy, but I am trying to keep family traditions going, because I get great pleasure knowing that my sister's children and grandchildren will have memories to share with their children of the very large, noisy and (I hope) fun holidays at Aunt Jeannie's house.   It's not much fun getting old and losing your siblings, my sister Linda and I were the best of friends and I'm still lost with our her.

I don't know about you all, but this Christmas is scaring me. I have 15 nieces and nephews alone on my hubby's side, 6 on my side, a Christmas Tea to attend, Mother, Grandparents, et cetera to buy for. I suggested that the adults don't exchange presents ( I mean didn't we out grow the need for stuff?) and that we give the children small presents or gift cards for a J

Jaymi -

I hear you - I actually have anxiety attacks about Christmas.  I have 5 kids agse 9, 11, 11, 21, and 26 and a 2 year old grandson.  I'm planning to purchase one useful toy for my grandson (who also has a birthday on 12/16).

I plan to buy my kids each a pair of jeans, pack of socks (the usual), the little kids each a sled, and a board game or two.  Our big thing last year was celebrating winter solstice and making treats for the birds and the animals.  So our focus was a little different.  For family members like my sisters-in-law, I'm going to make each an egg basket.  I'm going to give a fairy door to my mom and a hand carved tree for my dad (he's a forester).  Things that I think will make them smile and will remind them of me.

But I'll still have an anxiety attack.

It's a whimsical little thing - kind of like a frog house.  You can do a search on etsy.com      Silly, really - but it is the kind of thing that would make my parents think of me and smile (in embarrassment, perhaps!)

Oh, my heck!  They are just adorable!  Are you making it yourself or buying it?

I think I'm going to have to have one - I've always believed…

Wv_Hills…the pictures are beautiful.  Both are great. Good luck in your choice.  I do love barns but agree that the first one is mystical.  Find a way to do both?  LOL

Here is my spin on the pillow case thing…I buy fabric of holiday prints after the holiday dirt cheap and save it until next year.  I give a little parcel of holiday pillowcases to the children for Christmas.  Last year they got Christmas, Halloween and Easter.  This year they are getting Patriotic prints for the fourth, mem and labor days, and some celebration prints for New Years.  Next year will be Valentines and something green for St Patty's Day.  You get the idea.  Kids think it is great to decorate their rooms for holidays.  They have certainly been a hit.  Even the college kids ask why they don't get them.  It only cost pennies if bought at the right time.  I am like most of you and believe that Christmas should be in the spirit…not extravagent gifts.  I appreciate some one's time so much more than monitary things.

I do the gift coupon thing as well.  Personalized for that special person.  Office Depot will comb-bind index cards for pennies.  I give little packs of these away and believe it or not they actually redeem them.

You know, that is a great idea!  When my daughter was in Iraq, I made a bunch of pillowcases and hung them out on the line send sealed them up and labeled,'made with the scent of Pennsylvania'.  Pillowcases are great!  I like the coupons too -

Jane - I like that idea too - I have some old handwritten recipes from my grandmother.  That would be so neat!

Jaymi,

Actually it is my own doing - I over-analyze and worry about silly little things.  And you are right, these guys have the greatest ideas!

Going through sites today, I found this –

I Took The Handmade Pledge! BuyHandmade.org

It has quite a few sites of places to buy/sell handmade items…..if the link doesn't work it's http://www.buyhandmade.org

I thought this might help anyone getting ready for the holidays (selling, too to help with all the stress)

:)

I'm so sorry Jeannie. That's horrible. I hope the youth pick up the traditions and keep them strong. It's important.

I don't have much immediate family left on my side - siblings and nephews. I gave the nephews money, until they turned about 20. One just turned 18, so I give him money.

On my husband's side - large, we draw names. We draw two names and set the limit at 50.00. Some take the cheap route out…doing bare minimal and some go all out, but we are not supposed to spend over that. I always want to do my best - so I ask the person what they would like or let them pick it out - I just feel each person should get something THEY want. There are just too many to get everyone something, like we did in past times.

My parents used to wrap a box of Brach's chocolate covered cherries and put a bow on it, for the mailman and the trash pick-up men - they would put it in the mailbox/ on top of the trash cans and they would also give the trashmen a case of beer or a bottle of wine. Thrilled the trash men to death!!!

I think it's the spirit of giving and it doesn't have to break the bank - just put effort into it, to make it appealing to the eyes.

Totally agree Bella, we have decided to do a really nice meal and not buy gifts this year and avoid all the stress. My parents have a lot of extra medical bills, brother lost his job with the Alcoa plant closing, Sister doesnt have it to start with, other sister is paying for a wedding, and I am paying for hubbys school. So we are just going to enjoy the day together. And get little things of course for the 3 little kids we have.
