What "One Small Thing" do you do? Either when you are feeling low, or maybe when you're feeling good? Something you look forward to, use to reward yourself maybe, or as a pick up when you're having a bad day? Maybe something you do daily, to start your day right! I'm not talking about anything earth shattering, (though if you have THAT please share!), I'm just talking about just, One Small Thing.
This idea came to me when I was doing one of those things that makes me go, "MMmmmmm" whenever I do it…
I grate a good bit of nutmeg on top of the coffee grounds before I hit the brew button when I want 'something extra' for my morning coffee.
In thinking about this more, I remembered an elderly neighbor lady where I grew up who every day, stopped whatever she was doing at 3pm and had exactly 2 cookies and a very small glass of red wine (and I do mean very small, it had to be 1/4 cup or less!). It was almost a ritual for her, and it seemed to give her something to look forward to, and a lift for the rest of her day, but it was just 'one small thing'.

A mug of warm Honeycrisp apple cider! During Christmastime though, it's Peppermint Mocha creamer for my coffee!

Hmmm. Some years ago, we got into the habit of stopping somewhere for a milk shake any time one of the older folks had to go to the doctor. It became something of a family joke, but a very good one. To this day, if we must see a doctor, dentist, or even the vet, automatically we head for a special coffee or a milk shake after the appointment.

Mine is going for a "softy" at around 4:00pm on a hot summer afternoon. When I was a kid, my mother's parents used to stop by unannounced and swoop my sister and me up and take us for a soft ice cream cone. And it has to be a softy…hard ice cream will not do. And during the holidays, I have to have hazelnut flavored coffee. I don't know why, but to me, hazelnut flavored coffee smells and tastes like Christmas.

This is something I do only since Mama died.
Exactly at 9:00am I get my old man kitty to snuggle in my lap as I sit at my quilt frame and quilt a top that Mama sewed together but hadn't got around to quilting before she died. I quilt from 9:00am until 11:00.m and throughly enjoy every single moment of sitting at that frame feeling the stitches Mama sewed piecing the top together. Every single one of the tops I have I remember her sitting and sewing them together. I can see her sitting in her corner of the couch with the pieces in a shoe box sewing as we sat together and drank coffee. If something prevents me from sewing it throws my whole day off…LOL I have one more row of squares to quilt on Mama's Boston Commons quilt and then I only need to put a binding on it. It quilted up very fast and is just so pretty.
Now I need to decide which one to do next! My favorite Grandmothers Flower Garden or an appliqued flower basket set at an angle? I am leaning toward the Grandmothers Flower Garden because that is my favorite quilt pattern, and Mama pieced about 6 of these tops all in different sizes.

For me, I find doing something unexpected for someone else, buying a coffee for a coworker, bringing in cookies or a cake, warming my sweetie's towel in the dryer while he's taking his shower, playing "secret santa" at Christmas by leaving a tin of homemade cookies for a new neighbor or the mailman, leaving a stocking filled with doggie treats for a beautiful dog that spends his time out in the yard…
other than that…. being here & just patting, hugging and snuggling with my dogs always makes everything seem better….

Mine is when a little grandbaby comes running at me yelling "Nana!" like they just didn't see me yesterday. It will pull one out of the worst of moods!

I remember doing that to our Nana when my brothers and I were little. I can still see her getting out of her car, carrying her "pocketbook",smiling! We'd run outside and meet her in the driveway, yelling "Nana!" Thanks for that memory!

Oh – great topic! I have a couple things – one I sit down at my computer and just browse. No work, but play time – google weird things or re read Suzanne's old posts, chat with friends on facebook.
The other thing I do is watch my NCIS on demand and daydream that Mark Harmon is smiling Just For Me……….

When I really need a lift, or just to unwind from a stressful day, I take a read a good book while taking a bubble bath.
Another one is to have a cup of hot chocolate all by myself after everyone else is in bed. Yep, i drink alone. Maybe I have a problem. LOL

I get up a half hour earlier every morning to sit with a cup of coffee and enjoy my thoughts…planning supper for the day, what I am going to do with the day or just reflect on past days. Then I wake up hubby around 4ish or so and get started with the day. Since my days tend to be long and involved..this time of peaceful thought and coffe gives me a jumpstart. I look forward to my time. I can live without it…but I dont wanna.

After a mad dash day of hustling the kids to school/sports, working my full time job, then coming home and being a mother and wife… I usually take 30 or so minutes every night to soak in a hot bath
