p.s. You might want to look at lots of different decorating books for ideas. Try the library (if you have one) or go to a home-decorating store and "browse" their books. Or get a few home-decorating magazines or go on-line and look for home-decorating ideas.

I had to chuckle … I said go neutral and plain but my walls are yellow and rose and deep purple and chocolate brown … depending on the room. It has never affected what I have on my walls for decor.

The paint departments of the big hardware stores also usually have some very interesting literature avaiable – for free! Some of those big stores also have handouts in other departments filled with decorating ideas. This may not be the seaon for outdoor ideas, but for the rest of the house – any time is good!

Another important piece of information for you when working with color: all colors are either warm or cool…there is no such thing as a pure color. For instance, all reds will be either some version of orange-red (warm) or blue-red (cool). The same thing goes for every color on the color wheel. All blues will be either green-blue (warm) or violet-blue (cool). All yellows break down into either orange-yellow (warm) or green-yellow (cool). If you are interested in color, there is a wonderful book called Yellow and Blue don't make Green by Michael Wilcox that is worth its weight in gold. That book helped make me a much better painter and has saved me much grief in color mixing.

That is funny, because my walls are neutral, but my drapes are pigeon's blood ruby red!

Wow TXLady, love your porch!
This place will be used for relaxation and enjoyment. I did indeed go to the library for books. I'm especially looking for wall ideas. Beadboard, or panels or something besides just white drywall.
Also thing for wall decor.
Yesterday I bought a beautiful antique black iron bed, with lots of little curley Qs and it came with a practically new very deep mattress…all for 200 dollars. Can't wait to look at some quilts!
I also found some 12 inch wide southern yellow pine flooring. Trying to decide if we could install that (top nailed with cut nails) ourselves or if it would be too big a job.
Has anyone done their own wood floors?

Oh yea…wood floors!
David and I installed our own wood flooring. Our house is 1800 sq feet I think 1300 of that is our wood flooring. The rest is tile that we installed ourselves.
Putting the wood floor down was not hard. It was just time consuming and had to be precise. We had to put down a barrier between the concrete floor and our wood. We used a heavy plastic mat like thing then put our wood down. I LOVE knotty pine flooring but we went with a deep cherry wood and it is gorgeous with the color of paint for the walls that we chose.
Both my husband and I were 48 or 49 when we did this in the dead heat of summer in Florida!! Of course we waited until our air conditioner was working so our house and wood flooring would be acclimated. But we laid all the tile in 100 + degree weather and I thought I would just die of the heat…LOL

My brother is a painter. He says he liked gray with a off-white ceiling and trim. I thought ugh! But when I saw it (Pewter) if I remember right,it was gorgeous, makes everything in the room, any colors POP! Looked elegant!

Yes, Pewter is a pretty gray color.
It would be really eye catching with white trim.
I have learned one thing about having color on my walls instead of white or off white. When I hang a picture on the wall I better make sure that is exactly where I want it! Because of the different colors on my walls it isn't that easy to "fix" a hole from a tack or scrape on the wall. I remember using toothpaste to fix a hole in my dry wall. But with paint like caramel apple that I have you have to plug the hole and then dab some paint we have put away over the fix. That toothpaste more or less just blended into the wall color. So much easier to fix a ding in the dry wall with neutral colors…LOL

I would do the "pewter/off white "ceiling and trim here,but dont think the Landlady would go for the white trim,haha!

What I really like and is very country is that log house siding you can buy and put than on one wall.
We are going to put that up in our basement (our winterproject), the basement will have a bathroom, and open kitchen,livingroom and bedroom area with 1 or 2 walls of that siding.
Might be nice on the wall your fireplace is?

Ruthie I love your porch as well. Now tell me….doesn't the rain blow in when it rains? I know here that we have some dozzies of thunder storms in the summer when the heat gets high and its humid as heck!
I think it is just so exciting to have a new place to decorate anyway you want.

It certainly could and I have seen a little water on the floor close to the side that you see in the picture but we have a large overhang (remember the TX sun) and that pretty much takes care of it And the other side is against our deck and it has the same overhang as well as a canopy type thing over the deck….Hard to explain. Maybe I have a picture…I'll check.
But to answer the question, water blowing in has never really been an issue….and the furniture is all porch furniture from before and the pillows were made from dish towels and the green checked pillows from a sheet at Big Lots, and the Navy print on the rattan was expensive material but I bought it at a discount for $1.00 per yard. It's beautiful fabric. My chemo brain won't release the info or I would tell you the name of it but I just can't recall…so if anything got wet or ruined, it wouldn't be a big loss.
That was the message that I was trying to get across…You can do a lot of decorating at not a lot of cost.

Yes! We DID close….right in the middle of buying, decorating, wrapping for Christmas AND studying for my final exams…Whew, talk about a busy time!!!
As far as decorating….we tore up the beige carpet and put down natural solid hickory floors. Then, we tore out the slate unvented gas logs and put in a stacked ledge stone huge fireplace. Yay!
I've been watching craigslist and visiting junky antique shops and literally filled the whole house with antiques, quilts, and cute nic-nacks for about $2500. There are some amazing deals to be had right now!
I'll be posting some pictures soon. My camera battery died and I just charged it.
One thing I've learned though is….there are BEARS all over and apparently they love sunflower seeds so I can't hang my birdfeeder! Pictures coming soon!!

Here's a link to my picasa album for the mountain house. All the furniture came from junkshops, craigslist for CHEAP or extra family stuff. Even the quilts came from ebay for less than $30. I have no idea what to put on the walls.
And I need a wall idea color too.
Yesterday, when we got here the water was SPEWING from a broken pipe in the well house  But we have a plumber/electrician/contractor extraordinaire that looks and sounds JUST LIKE Mr. Edwards from Little House on the Praire. He came and took care of things.
THEN I overloaded a circuit and blew out a breaker. Other than that….it's been quite lovely.

Well it sure looks fantastic Miss Dana! You have a great look going already and I love that rooster lamp and the view out those fantastic windows, wow!
I guess I'd keep searching used furniture shops and such for good frames and interesting pictures, plaques etc and go from there! It sounds like months of enjoyment.

We used some logs cuts evenly across 
so they could be about 2 feet tall and were great little tables all around the porch for coffee mugs-a very important item of a porch!! Have fun & good luck!
