A sad day for our little town…

There was a press conferrence this morning at 11 held by Alcoa Aluminum Plant.  It has been what has made out little town of 5000 since 1948 when it opened and started production.  They have been cutting jobs for about 3 years now and today announced that it will be shutting production completely in 3 weeks.  6 months ago started the big layoffs. This last one will take 660 or more jobs.  In all probably 800 to1000 jobs have been lost.  Our little town just may dry up. People are really hurting. My brother is one of them and many friends will be affected. I am sure glad my husband is in school now for a new trade.  Please keep us all in your thoughts as all this unfolds.

I hate to hear that GeorgiaZ and I sure will. It is happening all over - I talked to my friend in Visalia, CA and 11 resteraunts were closing, laying off kids…the GM plant is laying off here…it's everywhere. I think there are harder times to come, sadly.

Thanks ladies, I feel blessed to have my job here at the hospital. Especially in the ER where there is always a need. So many dont have that security. But for what it means for our community and so many small communities around us that depended of Alcoa too, everything will suffer. restaraunts, groceries, local shops even walmart will all hurt. I am also blessed to have friends to lean on.  Thanks from my heart!Embarassed

Oh Georgia, I hate to see it when the life blood of a small town closes up.  I hope this opens new doors for  people, and not the opposite.  Hang in there.  What is hubby going to school for?

I feel blessed to have my job with the school district.

Oh Georgia, I'm sorry to read such discouraging news.  I'll also be praying for everyone affected by this decision.  It's vital that we lean on the Lord, especially in times like these.

I totally agree Kayis, what else would we have. We have our home paid for and cars paid for and we may eat some funny meals, but we will not go hungry.  God does always provide and hold us up when ever we ask.

Jayne, John just turned 53 on Sunday and is going to college for the first time.  He is in his 3rd semester of welding associates degree. A 2 year program. I am so proud of him I just cant stand it. He dropped out of school right before he turned 17 to join the army and spent 2 years in Korea.  Didnt even get his GED until he was 45. Just something he always wanted to do and as the old saying goes…we aint gettin any younger! I'm fixin to turn 50! Cant believe that either.

Sorry to hear about the plant closing Georgia. We have an Alcoa plant near here also. Matter of fact,my father retired from there after working 36 years. I know this plant has been laying off also. My daughter's small town lost their Rubbermaid plant and half of those employees left for other parts and the others have gone back to school, but even after school  there isn't much to offer in small towns as far as jobs when their bigest employer leaves. My prayers are with you.

That's great that John went back to school.  We run a welding program at the school where I work. The classes are full, running day and night.  We also run a welding program at the local prison. People around here are anticipating a new plant being built in our area to build bomber planes for the government.  I should know which plane it is, but can't remember now for the life of me. btw, my hubby turns 53 Nov. 1st.

Wow, my husband is the a flightline supervisor for the Bomber here…

He retires in 4 years or so and then wants to work for the FAA or something..no telling what, or where we will be.

My cousin has been a welder in Austin for years…good jobs.

Yes, welding is a good profession. Really good pay too. It will be nice to not have to struggle from week to week. It is all we have ever known so we are really use to it. But I could sure get UNused to it! And the teachers keep telling the students that welders are in huge demand right now.

I'm so sorry to hear about the job losses.  It is indeed frightening and with the coming election, a lot could hinge on potential changes.  I'm already wondering where the extra money will come from with all the talk of raising taxes.

I pray God will indeed open doors where they need opening and give a sense of peace to the people who are no doubt crying out for help.  There's a whole lotta shakin' going on… but He said He was able to keep us from stumbling and would put our foot on solid ground.  Good for you on the new job training.  May God bless all he puts his hand to in his new career!  :)

This tickles me. I love to hear stories like this. I didn't start going to college until I was in my 30's and I felt very odd until! Until!!!  I met Lena. She was A 72-YEAR-OLD lady in my geology class. She was so angry at a lawsuit gone wrong against her, she decided to START school to get a legal degree. I loved her moxy. She is fabulous. This was about 5years ago and we were both graduating with our associates, I wonder how far she has gotten?

I'm so excited for your husband. Congrats to you both.
