MOLASSES CRINKLES    

TEMP:  375°

1/4 cup shortening

1 cup brown sugar

1 egg

1/4 cup molasses

2-1/4 cups flour

2 tsp. baking soda

1/4 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. cloves

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. ginger

Mix shortening, sugar, egg and molasses.  Mix remaining ingredients; stir into shortening mixture.  Chill 

Roll into balls the size of large walnuts.  Dip tops in sugar. Place, sugared-side up, 3” apart on greased baking sheet.  Sprinkle each cookie with 2 or 3 drops of water to produce a crackled surface.  Bake just until set, but not hard.

TIME:   10 to 12 minutes

AMOUNT:  About 4 dozen 2-1/2” cookies.

These cookies are soft and chewy.  Real good with a hot cup of tea.  The recipe is from a 1950 Betty Crocker Cookbook.  I've made them for years.
