The Crooked Little Hen Saves the Day

Once upon a time, there was a Crooked Little Hen.

She lived on the porch because she just wanted to. She even roosted there at night.

On nice days, she sat on the porch swing and snacked on cracked corn.

But oh, how she loved dog food! Clatter, clatter, clatter. She learned the sound of dog food tumbling into the dish. The Crooked Little Hen would come running.

But somebody else knew the sound of dog food tumbling into the dish, too.

The Giant Puppy!

And the Giant Puppy said, “Oh, no, Crooked Little Hen, this is my lunch.”

The Crooked Little Hen was so sad because dog food was her most favorite thing in the whole wide world. Even Boomer was sad. He nearly cried. The Giant Puppy wouldn’t share with him, either. There was only so much room at the dish and the Giant Puppy was very giant!

And then the Crooked Little Hen said, “I know! Let me show you how I can…”

“….spill the dish so….”

“….we can all share!”

And they lived happily ever after.

    My chickens love cat food. I sometimes think they eat more of it then the cats do. LOL :o Poor kitties!

    Oh, what a smart cooked that Crooked Little Hen is! But Poor Coco. She might need her own, tall, not-tippable bowl. But you’ll have to keep the little one for the others. That would just be sad if they couldn’t all enjoy a nice meal together.

    ok I have been a lurker for a long time and I just had to comment on todays post, which made me burst out laughing….you give your animals such character…even a hen!! Thanks for starting my day off with a giggle…your blog is a true joy and I wouldnt miss it for the world!!
    You are doing what I wish I could do, just stay home with the animals, but unfortunately I cannot do that…maybe someday…but I will live through your little adventures and your wonderful way of life!! but at least I am not afraid to drive in the snow…I live in upstate NY!! LOL

    The Crooken Little Hen was put on your porch for a reason! To make the puppies share! I’m so glad she’s found your porch for a home…… many others wouldn’t be as nice to her, or let her eat the dogfood. Sweet, sweet story!

    Great story!!!! Love it. The pictures and story line would make for a great kids book of some kind. Poor CoCo i think she needs her own bowl of food. I do not think Giant puppy can last on shareing with the other two.:) That is one smart hen though.

    Awww, giant puppy looks very worried about his bowl being spilled! I wonder if crooked little hen is teased in the chicken yard and that’s why she wants to be close to YOU? Or maybe she just LOVES YOU:)

    Love it! My chickens all know if they line up outside the feed room door my son will feed them a handful of dog food. He loves sitting on the ground and letting them eat from his hand.

    You must publish that as a childs story!! My two grandbabies will be with me this weekend and I will have to read the story of the crooked little hen to them. Seriously, you could do an entire line of Crooked Little Hen stories about farm life and values(i.e. great story on sharing!)

    i have a Great Pyreneese, Gus, and a jarck russel, Earl. maybe they would like a chicken, too! great story…and i agree with others that a childrens photo book of the crooked little hen would be a hit. so would one about your goats.

    At my house dogs eat the cat food, cats eat the dog food, possums come up to eat anything left over, the coyoteslooking for anything moving! It’s the circle of life.

    You must get these into storybook form for all of us. There are so many looking for great children’s books with great photography and storylines. I Have grown granddaughters and now a 1 year old great granddaughter who would love them…I even buy beautiful “children’s” books just for myself. Your stories are wonderful! :heart: :snuggle:

    Your animal pics and stories are just absolutely my favorite thing! I feed feral cats and wild birds come under my covered porch and help themselves. Luckily no cats have been around at the same time lol.

    Guess that NorthCountryGirl and I are the only two readers who noticed Coco was not pleased with CLHs actions.
    It may have taken one more camera click for the hen to be in deep trouble !!!

    I’m leaving for Kentucky in the morning to see my granddaughter and this will definately be on the list of things to share with her!!! She LOVES to be read to, and LOVES animals in stories!     Absolutely adorable. Yes, I agree with the others, children’s books. (okay, spell check says I’m spelling ‘children’s’ wrong and I absolutely do not see where, guess I won’t be writing any books, children’s or otherwise.)

    One question, how does little crooked hen stay warm at night on the porch, since you’re getting all the snow that rightfully belongs to us Upstate New Yorker’s? (Hi, Jill :wave: )

    :chicken: :woof: That would make a great childrens story, you are an author, shop it around. Get an artist for the pictures, but use your pictures, have the artist do them over for the book. I would certainly buy this book if it was published.

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
