The Unofficial Guide to Chickens in the Road

IMG_6268
Confused? Need help finding your way around?

(Wondering how I make photos like this happen to go with posts? I say, “CHICKENS! I need you to clump up together and look bamboozled and curious.” And then they do it. Me and my chickens, we’re LIKE THIS. TIGHT.)

Behold, the main menu. Your portal into the delicious, lovely, instructional, and insane archives I’ve spent the past two years creating in my secret underground laboratory. From left to right, the main menu offers you Home (right back here, the main blog page), Cooking, Crafts, Garden, Barn, Country Living, Forum (come talk to us!), Email (email me! I try to write everyone back…eventually–sometimes it takes me awhile!), and Advertise.
mainmenumainmenu
Click on the button for Cooking and you’ll find further organizational options. Appetizers & Snacks, Beverages, Breads (All), Cakes, Candy, etc.
cookingpagecookingpage
From here, you could click on Cheesemaking and find all my posts related to cheese (including my homemade cheese press).
cheesepagecheesepage
Or maybe you’re interested in Grandmother Bread. I have a Breads (All) page, and also a Grandmother Bread page and a Quick Mix page, listing all posts related to those topics.
breadpagebreadpage
Looking for my pie crust and pie recipes? Try the pie page. Etc.

All my animal stories are on the Barn page. I have options for posts relating to Cats, Chickens, Dogs, Donkeys, Ducks, Goats, Pigs, Sheep, and Wild Birds.

Say you’re interested in chickens.
chickenspagechickenspage
Click on Chickens and you’ll get all my chicken posts.

Or try Garden.

Or Crafts.
craftspagecraftspage
Country Living.
countrylivingpagecountrylivingpage
There is also a search bar.
searchsearch
But honestly, me? I wouldn’t use the search bar. My posts are all so meticulously organized via the main menu that I promise it’s faster to find what you’re looking for that way than using the search bar.

And then there is the infamous hard-to-find print button. The old print button is at the bottom of recipe posts. I hid it there in a nefarious scheme to drive you crazy. (I’m sorry!)
printoldprintold
I’ve started placing a second print button on every recipe, as seen here, in a more easy to find location. Eventually I’ll get this placed on all my old recipe posts, but for now, be sure to look for it at the bottom of posts on older recipes. It’s easy to find at the top of the ingredient lists on newer posts.
printnewprintnew
If you click on the Printer-Friendly link, it will give you a nice, clean, graphics-free printable page.

But wait, there’s more!

Two easy ways to open new tabs on my site: One, simply set your browser options to open links in new tabs. Two, hold the SHIFT or CONTROL key down while you click on the link. (SHIFT will open to a new page. CONTROL will open to a new tab.)

Why right-click doesn’t work on this site is explained here. (Thank you to all the readers who helped with solutions!)

Anything else? Ask in the comments and I’ll try to help. Or, I’ll turn you over to the responsible party. And just who would that be, Suzanne?
IMG_6297
It’s her.
IMG_6308
Address all complaints to Clover.
IMG_6296
Good luck with that.

(Wondering how I make pictures like this of Clover happen? I say, “CLOVER! You beautiful thing. I love you. Help me. LOOK AT ME. Pleeeeeeeeezzzzz.” And then I give her 2,348,278 cookies and she does. Ever notice how Nutmeg is always right there? I think she has plans, big plans. And Fanta and Sprite? They’re always hanging back. Because if they get too close Clover will BEAT THEM UP.)

P.S. Someone asked about a calendar. I have a 2010 Chickens in the Road Calendar available now. Buy “A Very Clover Calendar” here. (I earn one dollar per calendar sale.)

P.P.S. It’s coming, it’s coming. The second (shorter) round of the SAM-e contest. Be here Tuesday to see my Top 20 contestant video! (You’ll have fun watching it, I promise!) If you don’t know what I’m talking about or why I want this so bad, read here. Again and again and again, thank you for voting!

Thank you for posting about how to open new tabs! I was getting so frustrated not being able to open links in new tabs and had no idea there was something so simple to help with it. I knew I could set my browser settings to open links in a new tab, but I don’t necessarily want *every* link opened in a new tab. I’ve never considered lifting any of your pictures, but I’m a multi-tabber in a big way. With my slower connection, I like to let links load up while I’m reading something and then get to them when they are loaded and I’m done reading. Plus, sometimes I’d like to follow a link to something, but I’m not done checking out the goodies here yet, and then I wind up forgetting to click it later. What a nerdy gush. I’m just so happy to know this because it will make browsing your site so much easier for me again, and I won’t miss anything!

I am ditto’ing Jenny above me. Thank you (and the poster who put it in the other thread a couple of days ago)so much for the Control and Shift options. Not being able to open in a new tab was the only problem I was having with right clicking.

Your photography is wonderful and it is yours! You have every right to protect it!

I’ll be waiting in line to vote for you and spreading the word!!

I agree with what everyone else has said.
I can only dream about being as organized as you are! I get side tracked way to easy when trying to get something done.

Can’t wait to start voting! I also will spread the word.

I wanted to let you know that I have been using your cheesy cornbread muffins recipe. In fact I have made it about a dozen times now, although I have to make a double batch each time. To save time I have written the recipe on a piece of paper and stuck it to the kitchen wall. The boys (17 year old’s) would eat these every day for breakfast if I let them.
I am in England so I use sausage links and cut them up.

I have used a few of your recipes and they always work perfectly so I know I can try any of your recipes and they will work.

Thanks for the instructions Suzanne…so far I haven’t had any trouble but if I do at least I’ll know what to do now. I made your Grandmother bread yesterday…man that makes good sandwiches and toast. My hubby says to tell you THANK YOU again LOL! You still start my day with a smile. :hungry2:

I also ditto what Jenny said. I’m amazed I’ve been online for 10 years and worked online for most of them and NEVER knew about the SHIFT click or CTRL click… it’s boggling. But Awesome! See, I learned something new here yet again! :) :woof:

Also, your organization is like unreal…

Can’t wait to start voting for you again. It’s so exciting!

You work so hard on your blog and it shows! Coming to your site each day is almost like we are really neighbors and just having a chat over the back fence. I love it, and thank you for all you do.

Another one-handed way to open in a new tab (at least on my Mac using Firefox) is to left-click the link and drag up to a space between existing tabs. I just discovered it yesterday and have been a lazy, one-handed tabbing fool ever since.

It’s the small things that keep me happy.

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
