One of my favorite things to do these days is to let the chickens (and ducks) out of the chicken house in the morning. They surge from the house with unparalleled exuberance. It’s a new day! They’re just happy to be alive! They burst into the warm dewy morning, eager to flap their wings and find the day’s adventures.
They make my day, every day, with this, their joyful morning rush upon the world:
Side note: The August 2009 Chickens in the Road Newsletter is in the works. If you haven’t signed up yet, click here to register and subscribe to the monthly newsletter. Wanna know what you’re signing up for first? I’ve created a Newsletter Archives page here. I started the archives with the June newsletter, so newsletters prior to that aren’t available, but from now on, every newsletter will hit the archives–one month after it’s published. The only way to get the newest newsletter, on time, straight in your email box, is to sign up! (Be sure to check your spam folder for the newsletter subscription confirmation email. Also check your spam folder for the newsletter as some people have reported finding it in their spam mail, which sometimes happens with bulk mailings.)
You can also advertise in the Chickens in the Road Newsletter. Along with graphic ads, I now offer text ads. Find all the information here.
And don’t forget to look for the August newsletter in your inbox soon! It includes a newsletter-exclusive Mean Rooster story and all kinds of other fun. Don’t miss it!

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....

"First it's glowing, then it's snowing! A pause, then screaming squalls and williwaws. Bright but bitter, then a thaw. Yet again it's cold and storming: What ever happened to global warming?"

Sadly, my kids sold the farm to a natural gas developer
Very profitable – they reserved the mineral rights – but we’ll never get to rock on the enchanted front porch again. And probably no-one else will ever want to, with all the gas wells and the trucks.

Since your oldest graduated, does that mean you have to take both kids to school?
My house cat has taken to going on the back porch with me early in the am. While she was minding her own business taking a morning nap in the sun, a mocking bird swooped down and attacked HER. The bird is fine, our cat has a bird-beak puncture on her neck. Ugly.

I think we have about 50 chickens now. Yes, I have to drive the kids around this school year–they take the bus in the mornings but I have to pick them up from practices.
