The Graduating Class of August 2009

They worked, they studied, then they partied at prom. They signed each other’s yearbooks. They traded cell phone numbers and email addresses. They hugged and promised to stay in touch, and they pressed their eager beaks against the fencing wire of their chickhoods, and then–then!–they took their first steps into their unfettered futures.

Their coming of age.

Their freedom.

They can drive, vote, fight wars, and sign contracts.

They can marry, divorce, have babies of their own.

They can love, laugh, fly, dream.

Mostly, I hope they dance.

She was voted Most Likely to Succeed.

    Love it! I have a question for you. Any advice/tips on keeping our chickens off the front porch? It can’t be gated and as much as I love my chicks, the pooh is not attractive! Please email me.

    I don’t know, Michelle. My porch is on the second story, so they don’t come up there. The only thing I can think of is that you may have to screen the porch in! (Not a simple solution…. Maybe someone reading here will have another idea.)

    Great loooking class! As a city gal, I’m curious – once you let them free, do you have trouble gathering eggs? By the way, grilled corn yesterday according to your instructions and it was the best corn I ever ate!!! I went to the produce stand this morning and got more for tonight!!!

    Too funny! Little N. is only 8, but i might just have to bookmark this when he graduates.

    he has 4 chicken entered at the county fair. They look pretty spiffy compared to some of the other entries–keep your fingers crossed! Nice glossy feathers and FAT! All three hens laid eggs already today and the rooster. . .just as happy could be!

    Congratulations chickens! Made me think about my own grad just a few … erm … years (not decades) ago. I don’t remember voting ‘most likely to’ over anyone. Hmm. Maybe I missed that. Wonder what my grad class would have voted me as mostly likely to? On second thought maybe I shouldn’t wonder about that! Great chicken pix!

    You are right–I love my chickens scratching around in yard and eating bugs-a little pooh on the porch is even ok-just keep a bucket of water nearby to wash away-my husband does kind of freak at that :purpleflower: :snoopy:

    :shimmy: my Dad’s cousin’s wife raised chickens on their dairy farm in Middletown Delaware she would candle the eggs,kill a chicken out in the yard,with an axe,raised a bunch of kids and was wonderful person They are long gone and I saw the farm is a fancy development She had a big back cst iron stove with a new electric one next to it Daddy said she wasn’t much of a cook,but my Mom was and helped,Daddy electrified the house and barn{electrical engineer}

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
