Milk Mouth | Chickens in the Road

Annabelle is eating regular sheep feed and hay now, but oh how she loves her bottle. She gets one in the morning before she goes down to the yard and one at night before she goes to bed on her blankie on the porch. She sees me coming, nearly tackles me for it, bracing her back legs for the all-out assault on her senses of the wonderment of its milky goodness.

The milky drool starts up right away.

The milk! It’s so delicious!

She is beside herself, bedazzled by the bottle, uncaring of her table manners.

And I’m in love with her thick, rich, foamy milk mouth.

I could gaze upon her milk mouth all day long.

Conundrum: Why does Annabelle have a thick, rich, foamy milk mouth at all when I’ve been feeding her bottles that contain nothing but water ever since her sheep milk replacer ran out? Why doesn’t she care at all that it’s just water? Why am I so in love with this lamb? Why is she still sleeping on my porch, and why does she think she’s a dog? Where is my mixer and my spare car key?

So many mysteries, so little time.

Poor little Annabelle — 1st she thinks she’s a dog, now she thinks water is milk (and where does that milk foam come from?!?!) Ha Ha Ha but the sweetest thing!

I think the foam is kind of like when our mouth waters in anticipation of food. In Annabelle’s case it produces lots of enzymes from her mouth to help her digest “milk”. The sucking reflex is strong, she enjoys her bottle. I bet she would suck on your finger with as much enthusiasm. My memory of dairy calves is that they will suck on anything that will hold still. Your shirt tail, knee cap, fingers, etc. Then they will butt with their head when no milk lets down. Sometimes hard to break the little devils of the habit. Do they make lamb pacifiers? Oh, that’s a bottle of water…LOL

I think it is an Easter miracle! Annabelle the lamb-sheep can turn water into milk. What a wonderful thing!
She is just adorable. You are just adorable, it is so wonderful that Annabelle has you. You are such a great Mom to all the 2 legged and 4 legged little ones!

I Love Annabelle. What a sweet sweet baby. I love Clover too. I am soooo jealous, I told my husband I want a little lamb and a little goat. I want a farm, with chickens – no roosters after reading your stories. The picture of your evil rooster scares me!

i know this. this is what they do. i have raised many a sheep on the bottle after the mother rejected them. this foaming is so very familiar to me from my childhood. they tug and push at the bottle, whatever the content. their eagerness is not to be stemmed
