This is what Coco looks like when she goes out in the rain and the mud and the muck.

Her face is the only white spot left. Sometimes people ask me how we keep her clean. I did give her a bath once. She was still a puppy and she still fit in the laundry sink.

The first time she got really muddy, mucky, dirty when she was too big to fit in the laundry sink, I thought, that’s it, she’s going to be a filthy dog from now on. You can’t have a white dog on a farm with a creek and a river and lotsa mud and expect anything else.

Then we found out she was self-cleaning.

She gets dirty, then she goes to sleep, and while she’s sleeping, the dirt just falls off. I’m not sure where it goes, but it goes.

That picture above? The next morning, she looked like this.

See?

It’s a miracle! Alert the media! I have a magic dog!

I can’t believe I’m up! I usually hold on to my pillow until Emma (the cat, my boss) starts jumping on me and patting my face around 9. But I’m moving to Iowa soon and I lay awake thinking of all the things I need to do. So of course I came here, and was so happy to see beautiful Coco featured! She’s better than a self-cleaning oven. My gosh, she’ll soon be a year old! Are you planning a big farm birthday party for her? Will Clover and the sheep wear tiaras?

LOL! I had the exact same thing happen Thurs night / Friday morning! Our dogs self cleaned! Our black and white collie mix came in Thursday night with not a speck of white on her (before photos are on my blog). She walked back out of the laundry room Friday morning looking clean as ever, not like she romped through the local mud hole the day before. And, no, she didn’t take a spin in the washer overnight. LOL I did a double-take Friday morning and scratched my head wondering where the filth went. Then I discovered that she left me a nice pile of dirt to sweep up, but I’ll take a pile of dirt any day over having to give a dog bath. Hooray for self-cleaning!!! Must be a W.Va. dog thing.

We have two Great Pyrs (George and Gracie), and I always tell my husband their fur must be made of Teflon – it’s amazing how they can look so horribly dirty and the next thing you know, they’re clean and white!

The top picture of Coco is how my Golden Retriever Cody looks 90% of the time. We gave him a bath one time and he immediatly went and found the nastiest mud puddle he could and rolled around really good. I think he likes to be dirty. Wish he was self cleaning and grooming. Coco is adorable!

LOL! this is so funny. But I know sometimes cats too seem to self clean. My cat with the white paws does that it. His muddy paws are somehow magically clean!

We have a pyr too…and this is by far the best feature they have. Especially when you have a pup that likes puddles like our Sammie!!

My alpacas do that to. They’ll go in the kiddie pool I leave out for them, then go roll in their favorite dust hole, and emerge muddy. A couple of hours later, they are back to bright white.

Our pyr, Phinneus (pictured on my blog) stays amazingly clean. People are always saying things like “How often do you bathe him” and “How can you stand having a white dog? They get dirty so fast”. I don’t have the heart to tell them it’s that magical teflon fur that all Great Pyrenees have.

coco is gorgeous! i read earlier where you mentioned that she doesn’t wander…when i looked into adopted a pyr, the website cautioned the reader about that breed wandering and i cannot afford to fence all of our farm so i decided to give up having my favorite breed…why do you think she doesn’t wander? does she chase deer? i also learned that pyr’s are very likely to develop cruciate disease…i hope she will be the exception.

Hee hee! You know, the same thing happens with horses! They can be caked in mud, then, two days later, even without being groomed, they are velvety and clean. Must be the reason for the rollin’ and shakin’!

I don’t know, but we don’t have a problem with her wandering. I haven’t talked to anyone who has a Great Pyr who has a problem with theirs wandering. Maybe some of the people who commented here that they have Great Pyrs will comment on that. If you’re out there and you have a Great Pyr, does yours wander?
