Dateline: A farm in West Virginia

After a cold and snowy January, the Appalachian region can expect temperatures above normal for February. Precipitation will be at or below normal, with snowfall completely disappearing. The coolest period will be during the first week of February, with mild temperatures in the mid-60s. Sunny, then warmer days will progress through the month, with daytime temps settling out at an average 75 degrees by the third week. The possibility of frost after February 3rd is zero percent, moving up the growing season for gardeners. Climatologists and meterologists point to magnetic storms and unusual patterns in sunspots to explain the dramatic change.

“We’ve never seen anything like it,” Brutus Crowell, scientist for United Climate Laboratories, stated during a press conference on Friday. “Weather and climate are driven by imbalances that we don’t always understand.”

In other news, the economy made a complete recovery yesterday evening around 11 PM.

    Thanks for inviting us along on your daydream. I think I’ll plant some of those candy bar seeds I saw in the gardening catalog. They grow in any weather and harvest time is upon a whim. Of course, they have no calories!

    Please…Suzanne…we will exchange some of our warmth and dry conditions for your snow! We need some of that moisture that the snow provides.
    If only we could ship some of yours here, and some of ours there, then we’d all be more balanced.

    Can you send that to the weather man so he can work on canceling the storm they are calling for Monday? So sick of the snow and cold! Hope you got some aluminum foil because I think we will all be tucking in again if the weather comes that they are calling for!

    I often look out my Ohio kitchen window at the garden and try to remember what it feels like to walk out there in t-shirt and shorts, feeling the warm/hot breeze. At the moment it’s covered in 6 inches of snow and ice.

    And that same magnetic storm used all that melting snow to send “drenching” rains to west Texas so that the multiple grass fires were put out instantly. I just love fiction.

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either.
