Snow-Stuck | Chickens in the Road

This is my car.

I haven’t left the farm since last Wednesday.

However, after calling off work Sunday due to snow, Ross decided yesterday that neither rain nor snow nor sleet nor dark of night shall stay him from the swift completion of taking burger orders at McDonald’s.

So he attempted to get down our driveway, against my maternal instincts.

After nearly thirty creeping minutes, he made it…..

…..this far…….

…..and concluded it was too slippery. He left the car there and went back to the house.

We’ll call that Life Lesson #452,801 in the Country.

I was biting my nails the whole time and he was scared. French fries just aren’t worth that kind of agony.

But, since I was down the hill observing his progress or lack thereof, I decided I’d walk on down to the freezing river.

I only slipped twice on the way. Here is the rope the kids swing on over the river in the summer.

Here’s the river ford we drive across.

Check out the ice.

Three inches thick.

I managed to make it back up the driveway without falling again. I’m best-suited for staying home and handing out cookies.

Clover: “COOKIES! The angels….. I hear them singing.”

And so, today, we’ll just stay right here. Not so bad. After all, we live on a farm.

Well, he can show his boss proof he tried to get to work LOL.

Have you considered paring your street vehicles at the old farm house and using the tractor or an ATV to get back and forth from the house to the vehicles? You could keep one of the vehicles down there at all times so you can get to a Dr or out for any other emergency. That’s how friends of ours do it who live up a steep hill. Just a thought. Hope you can get out soon!

you are DEFINATLY turning into a farm woman my dear! I HATE to leave the farm/home and go anywhere. I would LOVE if I could have my groceries delivered the 30+ miles out here from town. When I go, its an all day event and I have to take the truck to get our supplies……

I don’t mind being snowed in, provided there are supplies. Forget milk and bread…how about chocolate and coffee (and water).

Hope you’re all decked out with goodies and coffee (and water) and can snuggle with your kitties and the big puppy.

The car reminds me of the time I lived in North Dakota. I was so excited for spring one year and was so tired of shoveling out and about the end of spring….you guessed it. Blizzard. I got mad and wouldn’t dig the car out till it thawed. Sometimes you just have to take a stand at Mother Nature. Did no good but I felt better.

I wouldn’t want to drive across that river with all those ice chunks! Snow days on the farm mean taking care of the farm critters
and then staying inside baking…the aroma of baked goods makes for a cheery, warm atmosphere. Then indulge with some goodies and hot chocolate! I’m glad Ross made the right decision (and safe one!)

This is the part where I mock you from my position in the Midwest. People are out ice-fishing on lakes frozen three feet down. (No, I don’t know why they ice-fish. It sounds cold and boring to me.)

The former East Coaster in me is wincing in sympathy, however.

Wow – Unreal – we have not had any snow this winter at all. 15 and forecast of more snow. Good thing you have cookies and of course water too!!! Pray for the sun.

And to think I got all excited when I went outside last night to get something I left in the car and found “snow dots” falling from the sky! Of course they melted when they touched Mother Earth, but they were crusting on the car…I’m so easily entertained.
The picture of your snow-covered car, however, takes me back to January 1996 when I lived in MD for a while. Now that was a blizzard!

I hope Ross got cookies, too.

French Fries may not be worth it, but getting out of the house might have been. Having been snowed in for several weeks, there was much in the way of slick, dangerous roads I was willing to brave, just to get out of the house.

But since it looks like you’re not going anywhere, stay warm.

Suzanne, WE too are snowed in up our holler. We live 8/10 ths of a mile off the main road, but our road IS blacktop, but you have to go over 2 hills to get out to the main road. And I don’t Want to go OVER the hill (if ya know qwhat I mean.) my 15 year old had an eye dr. appt. today, but we rescheduled it. It is a good time for indoor things. Have a great day…tell Clover, Honey, Nutmeg, and Coco hello.

Woohoo first comment lol. I went out with friends on saturday and a normal 15 minute ride took us over an hour to get home. Poor lady driving had white knuckles the whole way home. Snow wasn’t expected ’til later but it came early and with a vengence. My daughter is going to college in Edinboro which is right next to Lake Erie. She has already had her first accident where she slid into a truck on ice. Everyone was fine – not so much the truck and especially not her car (sigh).If I wasn’t already almost totally white, I would be now.

Hi Catslady~ I live just west of Edinboro…..so you better believe we DO HOLD RECORDS FOR SNOW FALL HERE!

We always have way more than they announce at the Airport!
…..in fact our record is now about 115″ at least!

Soon we will have Spring and Sunshine…I hope! At least all the water helps fill the water table!

I am glad your son stayed home….unless you’ve had experience driving in slippery conditions, it’s just best not too. Besides, you have to worry about all the other wackos on the rode!

We were stuck in our house for two weeks in December with 3′ of snow… actually, it was an ice sandwich… a foot and a half of snow, then 6″ of ice, then more snow. Our driveway is an 18% grade in places, so we went no where!
