This weekend, two of my three children were stranded elsewhere and unable to come home due to snow and ice on our country backroad. 52, who was snowbound with me, and perhaps experiencing a case of cabin fever-induced dementia, agreed to be more than the shadow on the ground for once.

More than the man behind the hoe.

More than the figure on the tractor cloaked by leaves.

And more than the face behind the giant cup.

For those of you who prefer the mystery, click away now! This will most likely be the first and last time he will let me do this. For those of you who have been waiting for this, here it is!
To tell you a little bit about him, his family history goes back in this county for two hundred years, like mine. He has degrees in physics, math, and industrial engineering. He works for a regulatory agency for the state of West Virginia. He has three grown children, a son and two daughters. He did not agree for me to post his name, to protect the innocent. Or maybe the guilty. I’m not sure. Anyway, even to me, he is 52.

He has a very nice smile. And kind eyes. And a really cool deep voice.

He always knows what kind of berry that is and what that tree is called. I like to ride around the backroads with my head on his shoulder while he tells me stuff. He knows a lot of neat stuff about West Virginia and nature. He always stops and lets me take pictures. Even if he has to back up a quarter mile for a deer that leaps into the woods just as soon as we get there. I like to watch him read the newspaper and he likes to brush Coco’s fur and tell me for the ten thousandth time where to find the trash cans. He reminds me to put pants on. Especially when I start complaining about being cold.

(Photo taken at his house in Charleston. Notice that the birthday cake has five candles on one side and two on the other. That is because he is always 52.)
I love him very much.
"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....

Oh gosh, it is so fantastic to see your face for the very first time. You have any amazing smile. It reaches all the way to your eyes and beyond. WOW! Thank you so much for coming into full view of the camera! I think Suzanne is just a little bit crazy about you and over the months since I have been reading her blog on a regular morning (and sometimes I sneak over late at night to see her post hot off the press) basis I can see why she is head over heels for you.
Suzanne, thank YOU so much for sharing him with us. I feel like your life is a true romance with wonderful ups and the inevitable downs (but they make us stronger… right?) and I am so glad you have 52 to share all of that with you.
You just made my Monday morning. Thanks

like so many others, this is the first place i stop every day….and always leave with a smile
did you also notice that there is a “52″ in your license plate too? 1″ED” “52″ 1 ~ another coincidence? & 1+1 makes 2! sure seems like a sign to me!
I have a “princess” of my own and she is hooked on coco and the goats. She has given up the idea of getting a horse and now wants a goat (& chickens too). she LOVES pepperoni and i have made your pepperoni lasagna for her.
i am soooo wanting to try making the grandmother bread….
and cheese and a bunch of other things….
PLEASE pretty please with brown sugar on top????? DO a cookbook with lots of your gorgeous pictures and stories about the recipes…..I have my great grandmothers recipe box and love sitting there just looking thru the recipes, but know nothing about them. the one i hoped would be in there was not….her recipe for homemade donuts….the earliest memory i have is going to her house and she would be frying them on the stove in a big stockpot and the whole house smelled like nutmeg…
we have 4 “furry children” (read dogs) of our own and coco and the goats remind me so much of them…. such expressions – i could be thoroughly amused just sitting there watching their antics all day…..i wish they could talk for a day!!!!
please keep doing what you are doing….you bring a lot of joy to a lot of people and touch peoples lives in ways you will never know

HEY! WHERE did he get those glasses?! Or, at least, does he know what company they’re from? I’ve been looking for that exact shape of glasses for quite a while. My grandpa had those kind and I would really like to have a pair, too. It’s past time for me to get new ones and I’ve been putting it off ’cause I’m DETERMINED to get those for my next ones!
THANKS SO MUCH!
Blessings from Ohio…
