Snow Ice Cream and Dancing Farm Animals

I was fascinated by a discussion in the forum this week about making “snow ice cream” as it was something I had never heard of before. I didn’t grow up around a lot of snow, and while I certainly had my childhood moments of cramming snowballs in my mouth during rare episodes of snowfall, the notion of actually deliberately making something of it had never occurred to me. And it sounds so fun!!! And it is so fun!

You can see the forum discussion and a couple of variations on the snow ice cream idea in this topic thread, but here is my twist on it–a snow ice cream recipe pared down to a perfect bowlful, just right for each child (or grownup, c’mon!) to make it their way!

Here are the basics–

How to make Snow Ice Cream:

Makes one bowlful of snow ice cream.

1 1/2 cups fresh snow
3 tablespoons milk or cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon sugar

So go grab you a bowlful of snow. About a cup and a half. Should fit in a regular-size ice cream or cereal bowl.

Dump in three teaspoons of milk, or cream if you have it on hand.

Now add a half teaspoon of vanilla.

Then a teaspoon of sugar.

Stir it up! It’s pretty darn good with a cookie.

But think of the possibilities! You could add a few squirts of chocolate syrup, or caramel or strawberry, whatever you like. Throw some nuts on top and maybe a cherry. Or a dollop of blackberry jam! Or instead of milk or cream, use whipped cream. With kahlua. Mmmmm!!

Oh man, now I can’t wait for it to snow again………….. Snow ice cream is ridiculous fun.

Mayfield, a regional ice cream company (and wonderful) sells their Snow Ice Cream in the winter along with the ever popular Peppermint Stick flavor.

I know it is not the same as making it yourself, but it does show how much a regional favorite it must be.

Never tried that. I’ve only made ice cream -well, it’s not actually called ice cream, but I just can’t remember what it’s called in English- out of cream, eggs, sugar and berries, fruits, candy or jam.

You know I’m going to have to try this. We’ve got about three inches of fresh snow outside now…wonder what Hubby would think of snow ice cream for breakfast?

Snow ice cream is made on a regular basis here when it snows. I work with kindergarten students and we make it at school even. It is soo much fun! :weather:

Ooohh, I loved eating snow as a kid but had never heard of doing this. Where were you 30+ years ago to tell me?! LOL! It figures that I finally hear of it and I’m at an age (er, level of consciousness?) that I can’t make myself do it. Why, you ask? Well, my kids did a fascinating experiment once with a big bowl of snow, melting it down to see how much water it actually was… and we were blown away by how much dirt it actually was! :weather: Who knew?? Well…maybe we could make chocolate chip snow ice cream and pretend not to know. :clap:

I was raised in the panhandle of Texas, and we DID get lots of snow there. We had snow ice cream pretty regularly. But, at some point in the late fifties, “they” got concerned about the cleanliness of the snow – and my mother paid attention. SIGH… Thereafter, we were only allowed snow ice cream if it snowed enough that the air was “cleaned ” by the falling snow. We could then eat the top few inches – the presumed “clean” snow that had fallen through the scrubbed air. Ahhhh…the futility of mothers trying to protect their kids from the dirty world!

I haven’t had snow ice cream since I was a kid! After we moved to the desert in CA it was out of the question. LOL We always liked to make frozen passion. An easy form of ice cream, made with eagle brand milk and sodas and fruit too if you like. Eagle brand, cream soda and strawberries (or peaches!) is really good.

I am so glad you had measurements for the snow ice cream, because I didn’t – my mother made it for me. What a wonderful memory! It is soooooo good and prob. the snow is the lowfat version. (smile) :mrgreen:

This is fun, but doesn’t work when you live in the city. Our snow turns black and yellow quicker than I can get a bowl and a cup of milk. Yuck!

Sugar-on-snow is WAY better than snowcreame! Heat REAL maple syrup to about 230 degrees and pour over a big pan of snow. The syrup hardens and makes this delicious maple taffy-like candy! Yum! We had a sugar house when I was a kid and we did this every year during the sugar season.

I wish it would snow where I live in West Texas, but I don’t think it will :( I also wanted to tell you that since you put up your Kahlua recipe last year I have made it about 3 times and I plan on giving a bottle with personalized labels to all my friends for Christmas! Bein’ a Texas girl, I’ve not heard of snow ice cream. Where I grew up in San Antonio, it was a snow day off school if we got 1/2 an inch of white stuff! Not enough to scoop out of the grass. Thanks for the cool idea though if I’m ever somewhere that it does snow alot. I love the other idea someone posted about maple syrup candy made with snow too. AND LOL about the dancing elves.

Oh, man, the last time I ate that was in school, in first grade! We used the little cartons of chocolate (or white – but that’s not an option in my world) milk from the cafeteria to make it. I remember thinking it was SO cool to eat ice cream AT SCHOOL!

I’m homeschooling my 6 year old now…think we’ll try this for school one day…

I love snow cream! My mom always made it for us. She did say that some types of snow made better snow cream than others. I think it’s best when the snow is fluffy. We used to pour a little Hershey’s syrup on ours. Yum!
