    Oh, my friend had a dozen chicks this summer and they were so cute. My daughter couldn’t keep her hands off them. She kept saying “They’re making me play with them!”

    what happened is right. so fast too!!! it seemed like forever back then though. I loved the picture of the canning. can you tell us what is in them. I know some of it but not all. great picture.

    Yeah they grow quick…but can you imagine having to keep them warm all winter? Whew, that would be a chore. Ohhh, I wish my pantry looked like yours!

    I look at my 15 year old son and wonder the same thing every day! He is a handsome boy, but what happened to my cute baby?!

    Those were some terribly cute chicks. Looking forward to my first batch of fluffy babies`!

    Your grownup chickens are so beautiful (Sorry, Spartacus…I MEANT to say “handsome.”) But, nothing beats a handful of baby animal – feather or furs…they’re wonderful.

    Oh they are so cute but they also are very handsome and pretty. My daughter just told me(abiga/grandma) that she is ordering eggs in the spring and buying an incubator to hatch them. The only problem is how many will turn out to be roosters and who is going to do the um.. butchering. That all depends on how many survive and hatch though. blessings.

    OHhh, I so remember those precious babies…aren’t they fluffy adorableness, as you said!!!!! LOVE THEM!

    Wow, your pantry looks so cool. I have to admit, I know NOTHING about canned food – taste wise or what you do with it. My mother only had a couple things canned, when we were growing up, that I remember and it was given to us – and they always seemed strange like “pickled Mayhaw corn relish” or strange names like that and they tasted just as strange as the name. She was scared to can, smiling and saying “she was scared someone would get Botulism from her canning”. LOL
    OH, and alot were preserves…iike some preserved strange fruit concoction. I had an acquaintance that canned. I nearly died when she said she was RUINING all her nectarines with some red syrup (forgot the flavor – cinnamon or something) to can her fresh Nectarines. I wanted to say “well, you just ruined them with that mess”. But, she dated her jars and talked about what she needed to get eaten first, from pantry.
    My mother in law does jam and I do love that! :mrgreen:

    Are yours canned plain, like do you just open them and then season them (green beans)…and then the tomatoes, just open and use like canned tomatoes?

    i probably brood about 200 chicks :chicken: a year (in my living room!)and i never ever get tired of them! demon ducklings i can do without…..but chicks? never!

    Tell me about it! My rooster, Bob, may not make it through the winter if he keeps attacking me. His brother tasted REAL good in a pot of chicken and noodles the other day. I miss the days they were cute and would sit on my lap.

    Fortunately, that’s why the Creator created spring … we get to enjoy that fluffy delightfull newness year after year! Not to mention fresh eggs and chicken with dumplings the rest of the year.

    Got a question. If you have hens and roosters – wouldn’t your eggs be fertilized? I’m so confused over this one AND I’m a country girl but we never had chickens.

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either.
