Maybe I Should Have Offered Money

Daily Farmhouse Journal

So I decide that it would be a great idea to have a photo taken of me with the chickens for the Charleston Daily Mail story. My blog is called Chickens in the Road. I have chickens. I’ll just have a wee photo session with the chickens. I bring my handy helper with me to take pictures.

And there they are. My darling chickens. Eager to help me. Prepared to be useful!

I’ll just pick one up…..

Come here, little chickens…..

C’mon!!!

WHERE ARE YOU GOING???

Why don’t my chickens love me? Do I not feed them? Did I not turn their eggs every day for three weeks and hold them in my hand as they hatched?

Please come out…..

I’ll be nice……

I just want to see you. I won’t even try to pick you up.

Okay, the truth is, I want to pick you up.

You’re not going to hurt me with that sharp pointy thing, are you?

What?

I think this one is saying something.

I think he’s saying–

“Prepare to die.”

Stop that!!!

Okay, fine, now you are just insulting me.

I’m warning you. I’m getting mad.

Okay, really I’m just getting depressed and hopeless.

These chickens are giving me a complex.

I need Coco.

Coco is ADORABLE and she loves me and I’ll have no trouble picking her up. I’ll hug her and squeeze her and kiss her all over.

Except–where’d she go? She was here a minute ago.

Coco?

Where have you been?

AND WHAT IS THAT ALL OVER YOU?

COCO!!!

OF COURSE you look sane in that photo (daily farm pic). Really. I swear.

Whether or not you were actually wearing pants in any of those pics is another matter!

Yes, of course you look sane (well as sane as any of the rest of us…) Maybe you could Photoshop in the chickens? Or get a picture of you with the flock in the background eating some strategically placed chicken feed.

Yes, they do have pointy things. My guy has two wounds from yesterday to prove it. He tried to get the eggs from under a chicken that was on the nest. She decided that she didn’t want anyone reaching under her skirt, and pecked him not once, but twice. I wouldn’t like a strange man reaching under my skirt either. Maybe he learned something. I doubt it. He was probably the kid that touched the stove when his mom told him it was hot.

I cracked up at that photo of Coco. DOGS. My puppy came home the same way, only she’s a brown lab you see, so we didn’t notice until she’d RUN THROUGH THE HOUSE.

We can all see where Princess gets her good looks…and that hair! I WANT that hair. I’ve been striving for that hair!

At any rate, you look totally sane with a naughty glint in your eye. It’s so nice to “meet” the real you!

52 has good taste. The chickens do not. They have this primal “Don’t eat me!” thing going on…it’s wired into their chicken brains.

    Um, define sane?

Believe it or not I have four chickens that fight over the opportunity to sit in my lap and be petted. But I have to sit and let them come to me. If I go to pick them up, they want no part of it. Sit out there once a day and feed them bread crumbs, I’ll bet yours will do the same.

Of course you look sane. At least as sane as all of us  hmmm, maybe that’s why my kids never want to leave the house with me

Coco must also be a river rat

Don’t let your daugher read this - she’ll probably put on that teenage “air” and sass back - “No, I don’t” in the poutiest voice ever….

    Ah….we were all there once….

Aren’t you soooo proud of your chickens, knowing they are alive due to YOU hatching them..or growing them..whatever it takes, to get them here. LOL

How in the heck do you stay so skinny, with all the good things you make???? I know, all that hard planting, canning, farm work, huh?! Good pictures!

I love your blog. The great pictures come in handy to show my animal loving granddaughters. I showed them the Three billy goats before we visited a goat farm. I also told them the story of Three Billy Goats Gruff. Every goat there was white so they were a little disappointed after your great picture. One of them did want to sleep there with the babies.

Chickens are actually pretty easy to catch, if you do it right. Especially if you have a chicken house to conveniently corner them in. Most people’s mistake is that they try to grab the whole chicken, or that they move too slow. Aim for the feet, and do it in one quick movement.

I thought the pics were of your daughter. I had to read the comments to figure out it was you! You could be twins! I bet you hear that all the time. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Chickens! What do they know? They are bird brains. Any self respecting animal would love to sit on your lap and be photographed. Especially COCO! Mud, puppy, more mud! Cool!!!
