    I bet those ARE your chickens… How fun! :chicken: My family just got our first batch of chickens ever. 9 of them, and we are enjoying watching them grow. Have you had chickens before? Ive been told that if I want to help keep the chickens safe from critters at night, I should get a goose or two to go with them.

    So who gets to ’set’ on them – Princess? LOL What kind of incubator do you have? I usually set about 30 eggs every spring. The humidity level and the constant temp are important for getting nice chicks. One year the humidity got to low and I had a lower hatch rate, plus deformed legs…. :wall: If you have questions about it or somthing, email me and I can send you some info from my chicky book…. :) What kind of chickens did you get?

    We always had chickens when I was a child growing up on the farm. It was my job to collect the eggs. I hated that job. I was afraid I’d reach in and get a snake.

    Mother always had a couple of hens to set. She’d mark the eggs with a pencil and always put an old white doorknob in the nest. That way if a snake got in, and swallowed the doorknob, he couldn’t get out, and she’d kill it.

    I was always afraid of the old setting hens and the rooster.

    I think it’d be fun now. You sure help bring back memories.

    I guess the question is, which comes first the chicken or the egg? In your case, the egg? Are those for hatching or for eating? Good luck, if hatching. Enjoy, if eating. :wave:

    How exciting!!Owning and raising chickens will be a great experience….farm fresh eggs, joy, and a whole new set of stresses :) whoo hoo Chickens in the Road!!

    I love Chickens, I am really excited for you.
    I have a leghorn cross rooster which looks very much like your daily photo. He is quite a character. Best of luck with your hatching.

    Big woo-hoo! Enjoy your hens. There are few things as much fun or so satisfying as getting your own eggs. I’ve got a few more months before my chicks start to lay. Can’t wait!

    There is nothing in the world like reaching into a coop and picking out still-warm eggs for breakfast. It’s a great way to remember where our food comes from, and better yet ~ it’s a great way to move our dollars away from the unfortunate battery hen industry. Keep happy chickens and get fresh eggs! Fun!

    Ah! Jealousy! I was just commenting to The Wookiee yesterday how we needed a chicken. I refuse to let a 600 square foot apartment stand in the way of fresh eggs.

    One of my daughters was fortunate enough to have the only teacher in school who would set eggs. Every spring she would set about 2 dozen eggs and let the first graders watch and wait for them to hatch. The kids loved it, it was a great science lesson and when the chicks hatched, they went back to the farm to live.

    Wow, just had a flashback to when my parents took me to see The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (aka The Chicken Ranch)

    …and to the house before this one…the property the development was on was an old chicken farm.

    I think after seeing the baby chicks hatch I may have a hard time eating eggs – on the other hand I LUV EGGS – it’s a dilema :chicken: I went food shopping today and the price of eggs has gone up quite a bit.

    How can you tell that a hen is a layer or one that is raised for meat? That is one thing that was gone on the farm when I was a kid.

    I’m told all these will be layers, which can also be eaten, as long as they aren’t named. The eggs take about 3 weeks to hatch.

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either.
