The Two-Headed Calf: A Little Golden Book Story

Daily Farmhouse Journal

52: It was out Bear Fork a ways. I was probably six or so. Everybody knew about it. It was a big event. We went to see it, probably on a Sunday afternoon. It could eat with both mouths, and it had three eyes. The farmer who owned it kept it in a stall in his barn and let people come in to look. He lifted it over the stall gate and set it out for us to pet. His question was, “If I lift him over the gate every day, will there come a day when he’s just a little too heavy for me ?”

Me: So when was it too heavy for him to lift?

52: Never. It died before it got too big.

Me: I don’t like that ending!

52: Okay. He was a Super Farmer and he could lift it forever. He’s still lifting it.

Me: I don’t believe that! I want another ending!

52: Okay. One day he lifted it and the farmer broke his back.

Me: I want a new story!!

Oh, poor thing! I’m amazed it was born live and survived to grow at all. The poor cow that gave birth — mustn’t have been an easy one!

P.S. I really like the photo of the day — great icicles.

We had a huge storm yesterday — about 5 inches of snow, then hours of freezing rain, then more snow. After I shovel out, I’ll take my camera and slog around a bit, try and get some decent pics. They’ll probably show up next week on my site, and I’ll start a Feb. Picasa album too.

What? 54? Is this a big brother or a big sister? This is getting interesting. No offense, S, but the calf photo makes me cringe. Ewwwww! Poor thing.

Poor little thing but at least it was well taken care of. 52 has a great sense of humor - but then I would think he would have to since you do too. And,yes, inquiring minds want to know who this mysterious 54 is - especially if he’s male - you’re going to have some visitors :rotfl:
Oh, and Mental Pause Mama, I’m almost done with that book and I too recommend it.
