There’s Money Falling Out of the Walls!

Daily Farmhouse Journal

Cash!!! Coming out of the woodwork!

This old farmhouse has an attic. There are windows upstairs. But in the attic bedroom the boys share, there are only windows on the side of the house. Where are those front windows? The mystery of how to get into the part of the attic where those windows are has driven them nuts for two years. Even I don’t know how to get into the part of the attic where those windows are. My cousin blocked it off. I figure it’s where some heavy piece of furniture is, hiding the entrance. Anyway, even I don’t know.

And then…. They found money. Falling out of the wall. FALLING OUT OF THE WALL. In the staircase that goes up to the attic. Okay, just about anything could fall out of a wall around here. But money???? And not just any money. Confederate money.

We’re rich!!! The children are practically in spasms. We’ve got to take the money and sell it. They knew this house was good for something! No more complaints about old houses! Old houses have old money! And it’s theirs! They’re rich rich rich!

Waitaminute. This house isn’t ours and anything that falls out of the attic walls doesn’t belong to us. We need to go tell the cousins.

NO! I am insane. I am cruel. I am brutal! Anything that falls out of any walls around here belongs to the children! Finders keepers! In fact, the children are ready to tear the walls apart to see what else of value is lurking inside there!

Uh, no. No tearing walls apart. Anything we find must be shown to the cousins.

Well. Next time they find something FALLING OUT OF A WALL, they aren’t going to tell me. In fact, they’re going to start tearing the walls apart right now.

I drag them next door with their pile of crumbling loot. My cousin takes one look at it and points out, ‘It says PLAY MONEY right there.”

Oh.

I say, “I’m sorry about tearing that wall apart then…..”

My cousin almost totally recovered after I told him I was just kidding.

I think “play” Confederate money is very cool too! I’ll help tear apart the walls — you never know what could be behind them. Wow!

Have you found out where the entrance to those windows are yet? I wouldn’t be able to STAND it! I’m with Kacey - I’d have to find out where it was and open it. Those walls would be GONE!!! Do let us know if your boys’ curiousity gets the best of them.

I’m with tombstone annie on the windows. It would drive me beserk until I found the other entrance to the attic to where the windows are. Who knows what you might find there. Hope everyone has a great holiday. Suzanne, any word yet on when the next Haven book will be coming out?

So much fun! My brother and I once found a whole BOX of confederate money in our grandparents’ barn. We were beyond exhilarated…until they told us it was worthless. I think my brother still has that box stashed somewhere…in case it should someday be worth something. He has always been a packrat. And a dreamer. Tell the kids to keep looking for treasures; dreams are everything.

Very cool! Though I hate to say it, but I think Confederate money isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. Even in this day and age. *g*

But I’d be tickled to find it coming out of the walls, too!

Leanne, I don’t know the release date for sure on my next book. Later this year, that’s all I know right now. I’ll let you know when I have a release date–I’ll post here and it will also be on my Books page! Thanks for asking!

Curiosity would have eaten me to death if I lived two years with a part of the house off limits. I admire your restraint …..and of course, respect for other people’s property and all that.

I can imagine how disapointed the kids were to find out it was fake, but how terribly exciting the treasure hunt must have been up to that point.

Hey, but what about that note/letter in the upper right corner of the photo? Who wrote that? What’s that all about??? If it’s from someone famous it could be worth some real Yankee money. :weather:

What fun! Play money or not, that seems very exciting. And I am with the others, I admire your restraint in not finding out where those front windows are!

hahaha! I laughed so hard! What a cute story! Couldn’t you cut a hole in the wall and the stick a dresser or something in front of it?

OK, Here’s a thought, do you have a ladder? I would try the windows from the outside. Also, the old confederate money is selling now. But that could have been something I saw on the magic TV when I had the flu and was delirious.

    Good luck with the windows.

I couldn’t help but laugh, but I can imagine the disappointment for the kids. I’m laughing about the cousin’s reaction.

I enjoy your blog entries/journals. I think I’m falling in love with your kids- and I wish I lived in rural West Virginia so I could be your neighbour and meet you at the store and exchange pleasantries. Our world has become so much more intimate-I can sit here in Ohio and exchnge pleasantries, anyway. Thanks for the cornmeal biscuit recipe-everyone(except my husband who won’t eat a biscuit to save his life) absolutely loved them!

If he still has that box of confederate money - i would be banking on it haveing value. I would do some research on the ‘play money’ too. Ya never know - one mans junk is another mans treasure. Confederate stuff is SO SOUGHT AFTER these days. I have a crow bar if the kids need some help with the walls.
