I Think This Could Be A Little Golden Book Story

Once upon a time there was a little kitten. She was black and her name was Desdemona. She lived in an old farmhouse in the country and her life was full of mice and birds and other cats to play with.

One day, Desdemona saw her mistress getting ready for company. Her mistress, not thinking Desdemona could help, put her outside while she cleaned. Desdemona didn’t want to be outside. She was tired of mice and birds and playing with other cats. Desdemona wasn’t such a little kitten anymore. She was a big kitten now! She wanted to help!

She decided she should break in through a window by pushing the screen down at the top then climbing over the curtain rod and down the drape, knocking it all to the floor in the process.

Then she said to herself, “Now that I’ve let more light into the house, what else can I do to help?” She thought and thought about what she was good at. She was good at catching butterflies. She was good at scratching people’s arms and legs. She was even good at growling at the dog. But no, that doesn’t sound like it would help her mistress get ready for company.

Then she came up with the perfect thing! She went straight to the bathroom and said to herself, “Here is what I do best.”

And she promptly peed all over the floor.

Anyone want a kitten? :fryingpan:

Oh, Desdemona is a handful!!! What an imp! Nicki jumps at the curtains (and has put runs in the shears), but he hasn’t tried anything like this. I’d better not let him see this photo, either. *grin*

Count me in for the draw, and NO, I don’t want another kitten. Correction: I do, but I don’t want Desdemona. She’s all yours, the cutie pie.

Good girl Desdemona! Showing everyone where the bathroom is was very helpful. Your mistress might have huffed and puffed about it but she just didn’t understand that you were indicating to the guests where the human litter box thingy is. Such a clever kitty.

:eek: We took in a stray once who used the bathtub instead of the litter box…………This was the one who jumped up and rang the doorbell when he wanted in! He didn’t stay around too long – guess he got lonesome for home. :thumbsup:

Oh I almost peed myself reading your post – sorry but it was so funny and especially the way you told it. I just took my kitten for shots today and the vet had the most adorable 3 month old brothers up for adoption but alas I think 7 is enough for a while so I won’t be taking Desdemona either

Desdemona is quite the little ‘helper’. Maybe helper is not exactly the right word to use…more like a little ‘tornado’ on the loose…ha,ha. I imagine life with Desdemona is very interesting and full of many surprises…good and bad. I don’t believe my life is ready for your ‘cutie’.

Awwww, Desdemona is adorable. I wish I could take her, but I have 7 inside babies and I feed all the strays around here too. One has decided to adopt us. *g*
I’m sure Desdemona will behave for your company, she sounds a bit peeved. When she gets over it, I’m sure she’ll be sweeter. (Hahahahahaha!)

We have 5 cats already, but none as clever and inventive as Desdemona, who first found a way to break back in to the house, and then found a way to punish you for putting her out. Of course, she’s a lovely kitty and she WAS trying to help. :purr:

Sorry, but I burst out laughing reading that line about peeing in the bathroom. At least she knew wich room to do it in.

I love that picture of Desdemona climbing on the curtains or is she just hanging around.

We also have 2 cats, one little one (Thaila). Our big cat (Didi) isn’t the mother, but she has adopted Thaila. They even wash each other!!
But for the moment, 2 cats is enough. Dididoesn’t cause any problems. But Thaila… She loves to race in the house and if anything stands in her way, she just knocks it over. :talktothehand:

I know you live on a farm and probably HATE the idea of cleaning litterpans.. but you mention your kitties poop and pee in bad places.. maybe just ONE litter pan, outdoors??

AND you have SLAVE LABOR still available (teenagers) to clean it!??

Just a thought..

Hi, Maddie! Here’s a complicated answer to the litterbox quandry, LOL. I do actually keep a litterbox–in the winter, when it’s so cold, the cats don’t like to go outside so much. Once spring hits and the cats are out chasing mice and birds and sunning themselves, I put the litterbox away. All of my cats behave themselves indoors–except when they are kittens. I’ve had all my cats since they were kittens, and somewhere around six months old they seem to “get” it about going potty outside. So I just keep the litterbox in the winter when they don’t want to go outside.

Fuzzball is not actually my cat, she’s my cousin’s cat, but since I took her and her last litter in (and then had her fixed, by the way), she has kinda taken to my house. She thinks she lives here! But she doesn’t!! LOL! She’s eight years old and has always been an outdoor cat and I suppose she is too old (?) to train–I’ve tried–I had the litterbox out still when I first brought her in with her last litter and she Would Not Use It. Desdemona (the one out of the litter that we kept–I gave the other four away) is still a baby, so I don’t Expect her to behave yet, just like I don’t think toddlers are always able to control themselves. I’m hoping that Desdemona, like my other cats once they matured, will “get” it and be okay in a few months. I don’t know what to think about Fuzzball because she is an older cat already and just doesn’t seem Interested in behaving herself!

If you–or anyone out there!!–has ideas about how to train an *older* cat who is set in her ways, I’d love to hear it!!!

Yikes! No ideas re. getting an older cat to use a litter box, I’m afraid. My two are predominantly indoor (as I live in the city and won’t let them roam–i.e. become road kill) and I have four litter boxes just for them. Three in the basement, one upstairs. When I add my third adoptee at some point (no, NOT Desdemona–lol) I’ll add another. I’ve never minded scooping litter boxes twice daily and scrubbing them out regularly. It’s just part and parcel of having cats.

Maybe Fuzzball would go for an extra large box with pine litter instead of clay? Beats me. I think you are out of luck on this one!

What a cute story even if it made extra work for you. This is one of my periodic visits. Until I get my new computer set up and going, this one is always a handicap–especially on blogs where you can’t save intermittently.

I’ve got your new book but it will probably take a while until I can read it. I’m still trying to unpack and get settled in. Doing it all alone is not faster than doing it with a family especially if, like me, you don’t have much strength and constant pain.

Hope you’re all doing well otherwise. I’m sorry I can’t help you with teaching an old cat new tricks. I can’t even do it with myself. My tummy is giving me loads of pain. :sick: So I’ll say good-bye for now.
