Globetrotting
If you put in “england, sheep, cute” in Google now, my blog comes up on the first page. I hope I’m not going to attract some of those weirdo sheep sex fetish people next by putting the wrong key words into a post.
Oops………
Q: Why did the sheep get arrested on the road?
A: She made a ewe turn.
This is a G-rated site, people! Q: What do you call a farmer with a sheep under one arm and a cow under the other? See, I’m not going to finish that one!
Is there anything more quintessentially English than the classic red telephone box?
This photo was taken in the adorable seaside fishing village of Mousehole (pronounced Mowhall), just past Penzance along the spectacular B3315 coastal road. With its tiers of cottages, miniature harbor, and narrow lanes, I thought it was the cutest village ever.
Until, of course, I saw the next one and the next one and the next one. They are ALL CUTE!
There is something very special about a thatched cottage. I swear, I think Bilbo Baggins lived in this one. I could almost see him at the door…. Thatched cottages are iconic of England to those of us in America. We’re used to seeing them only in Thomas Kinkade paintings. Color me thrilled when I found them everywhere in the villages and countryside of Cornwall and Wessex. We even saw workers thatching a new roof–and not in some sort of historical theme park but in real life, in a village.
There are more thatched roofs in the United Kingdom than any other country, and the typical thatch material is wheat straw or water reed. Since a thatched roof can last 50 years and new thatching is laid over the old, there are medieval thatched buildings with under-thatching over 600 years old. How cool is that? If I lived in England, I would so be living in a thatched cottage.
Or in one of these gorgeous country homes….
….on one of these pretty country lanes….
….and I would so totally have some sheep.
I’d sell fresh veggies on the side of the road and leave a note telling people to leave the money in the gate box…..
….when they’d finished admiring the beautiful hidden stream over the side of the stone bridge.
I’d have to have one of these adorable islands in the middle of my duck pond, too.
I’d watch the sun sink over the sea…..
….then head to the pub for a pint!
What about you?

Lovely pictures, Suzanne. I remember when we traveled around the Dorset coast. The quaint villages with the thatched cottages were so wonderful. I just wanted to move there.

Your pictures are making me SO homesick! Yes, I know, I’m American, but I’m English at heart. I lived there for a year and have been back for visits, and I LOVE it. Want to live there full time.
And lol–like you, I’m terrified of the roundabouts!
But I don’t care what anyone says about the food–I love it! Pub grub is the BEST!
OMG, I’m so ready to go again…
