Turn Off The Oven

RWA conference time! I’m packing today, and first thing tomorrow I’ll be off to Texas where I’ll spend the night, dropping off my daughter with her grandparents to be spoiled rotten. I’ll go to Reno on Wednesday, where my schedule is packed with fun stuff like the massive literacy charity booksigning, lunch with the eHarlequin editors and authors, the National Readers Choice Awards ceremony, the Ritas, various meetings and cocktail parties, and the incomparable dance-all-night Harlequin bash. I’ll be seeing my editor and my friends, and having more fun with writers than should be legal. If you’re going to be there, look for me! I’ll leave Reno on Sunday for another night in Texas before getting home to North Carolina on Monday night, August 1st.

:bananadance: I’ll be back and blogging on Tuesday, August 2nd, with cool photos (I am a FABULOUS celebrity stalker at conferences!), more Hot Target, and a GIVEAWAY! Don’t miss it!! Be HERE, August 2nd!

For now, I leave you with the second installment of my eHarlequin online PAX read — Hot Target! (Click on the green “read” button at the bottom and scroll down to Hot Target.)

If you’re a writer wishing you were going to this year’s Romance Writers of America conference in Reno, my newest column, For the Left Behind, is for you at Romancing the Blog.

And one more! My latest DotMoms column, Life is a Deck of Pokemon Cards, is up, too.

Back soon! And keep an eye on Jill’s blog where she’ll be posting pics live from the conference! Oh–and the “Turn Off The Oven” title is for my husband, who never turns off the oven and may blow up the house while I’m gone. Honey, TURN OFF THE OVEN!

You Know That Shoe Thing?

I went out yesterday to get some new nail polish because I was running low on a couple colors. I’m going to paint purple and silver….something…on my nails for Reno. Not sure what yet. I’m expermenting with flag designs and ladybugs and flowers. I love to do nail art. I used to amaze my seventh graders with my nail art when I was a teacher. They’d come in every Monday and say, “What’s on your nails?” The girls would gather round to oooh and ahhh. Since I wasn’t a very good teacher, I had to have something. At Christmas, I’d paint the other teachers’ nails in the little slits of light in the back of the room with entire scenes of snowmen and falling snow and Christmas trees while the kids were watching movies. I should have become a manicurist. It would have been easier and I wouldn’t have gotten all those hate notes from parents.

So anyway, I was OUT TO GET NAIL POLISH. THAT’S IT. Accidentally, my car fell into the parking lot of this place called The Shoe Depot. It was in a strip mall next to Wal-Mart. From the street, this place looked like the size of a closet. Inside, it was like a ballroom. A ballroom full of Cinderella shoes. I mean, really, my head was reeling. THERE WERE SO MANY SHOES!! And they were all so pretty! And glittery!!! I spent an hour there. I left with these silver sandals. They are sparkly and strappy and they have this baubly thing like a chandelier bead hanging off the ankle strap. I mean, HOW COULD I RESIST? When I got home, my husband said, “Just what you need. More shoes.” I said, “EXACTLY!” I don’t know if I’m bringing them to Reno or not. I don’t think they will fit in my carry-on bag. Maybe I will hang them over my ears and wear them onto the plane that way. What do you think?

TIP: Use toothpicks to paint detailed nail art. Shhh. Don’t tell anyone. It’s a trade secret.
